So my boyfriend is shooting a movie in Oakland, we went this last weekend to scout locations. We are shooting 1 minute away from the Doughnut Farm and I already am picking up a box of doughnuts for the cast (and because they are tasty!)...

I am in charge of food. Since it will a 4-5 hour shoot we want to provide the cast with lunch. I am bringing snacks and drinks but I heard (read via yelp) about Hella Vegan Eats. I asked around Oakland and no one knew about them. Has anyone used them to cater? If so would you recommend them?

Thanks! :)

I've seen their name around, but I don't know much about them. If you want to get something that's definitely delicious, Flacos does catering and bulk orders.

But Flaco's does not have a menu up - unless I am missing something. :/

Vegansaurus has had some Hella Vegan Eats and reports that they are AMAZING. They were at Art Murmur last month, but alas, I was there this month, and they were not there. Sadness! So, unfortunately, no first hand experience, but Vegansaurus says good things.

We went with HVE. I contacted Flaco's first but after a few dd & confusing emails that seemed like they were put off by catering we just contacted HVE. I did not get to try all the food we ordered....It impressed the rude people on set who bitched about vegan food and went back for seconds though!

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention we had the tamales at a party and damn they were good! That's cool that it worked out.

HVE is now at the civic center farmers market every Wednesday! Anybody have recommendations for what to try? My husband works around there and I'm trying to convince him to check it out.

I'm totally interested to try out their food truck, but I am cautiously optimistic. I went to two of the pop-ups they did at Dear Mom and both times felt they were majorly underprepped to the point where we were waiting an hour plus for food.

They always sell out (sooner than maybe they should?) and there is a wait...the food is legit though. My fave is the lusty lovers taco. I also really dig on the chicken & waffles!

I've had a few good things from them, but I feel like San Francisco should have a much better food truck. If HVE were in.....Tulsa, OK, I could understand (I'm from Tulsa so I can say that). It's just so fussy and trying hard. Each dish could lose about 5 ingredients and be the better for it. Their menu is rarely appetizing, but I feel like I have to support them. I don't know. Maybe I like healthier food because it's so heavy on the fried and rich things. I'm glad lots of people like it and I hope they only get better and better.

Oh, I like them! I've had their Korean 'tacos' with scallion flatbread as the shell - they were fantastic. This Sunday I got to their truck in Dolores Park really late, so all that was left were the gluten-free waffles, which were pretty dry. But that wouldn't have been my first choice had I gotten there sooner, so I feel it's a bit unfair to judge them for that. Their soul food looks incredible.

everything they make is from scratch unlike saturn which uses premade for most of their items of the same nature.

Seriously- quit hatin' on Saturn. Some of us like it there and they're pretty darn involved in vegan activism and community outreach.

I dunno, I feel like that's more the California way than the Oklahoma way.

Then continue to eat there - by all means, have fun!

I just do not see the reason to dis HVE and talk about food integrity when people are willing to go to Saturn and pay $10 on a burger when the only thing on the Oroweat bun that has any prep work involved besides opening a bag and using a microwave is a sliced tomato.

And I don't see the need to dis Saturn in turn because someone else criticized an establishment you like. You can address Alin's comments (I assume that's who you were responding to) without dumping on other vegan-friendly establishments.
