Joel Olson, "Hippycore" zinester and writer of "Soy Not Oi," founder of Bring The Ruckus, professor at NAU, and anti-racist activist, has passed away. No details are public, I just know that the world has lost a great man.
I didn't know Joel well, but he was always friendly when I ran into him at punk shows in Phoenix. I wanted to write a fitting tribute, so I've actually got to know more about him in the last few hours than I realized in the last 15 years.
Here is a post with some information on his writing, activism, and influence. I share my thoughts, but what you should really be checking out is all the links I put in there (including when
Isa Chandra wrote about "Soy Not Oi" a couple years ago). Of course, you should also explore
Joel's home page.I found out about a neighbor's passing yesterday, an octogenarian who watched over my community like a superhero, and not more than 24 hours later, I got word about Joel. It just reinforced to me that you shouldn't wait to let people know how much they mean to you. We come across so many teachers and so many inspirational people in our journeys. It'd be good to let them know their impact on us while they're still around to hear it.
We're in this together, y'all.
Thanks, Joel.
