I went into a Wholefoods in London a couple of summers ago and was just blown away. I'd love to be able to buy different tofus, baked goodies, decent vegetables!

Here we've just got a H&B, a tiny creepy HFS and that's it. I relish going home to Leeds and finding time to stock up at Out of This World.

Whereabouts do you live?

You've not seen anything till you've experienced wholefoods market in cupertino :)

Help your local hfs improve? They probably use Suma as a supplier. If they do they have access to most of the stock that wholefoods do in the uk. Most i've encountered will let you buy a case / half case as a special order

I don't actually know if I've ever been in our HFS, it's always shut when I go past and it's really tiny and dark, with a window full of muscle-building protein and odd supplements.

It's getting even tougher out there on the high street. Apart from supermarkets muscling in on many shops some suppliers have recently upped their minimum order and/or increased the amount that shops have to spend to get free delivery. The only glimmer of hope in the future might be that supermarkets are gradually selling less food and moving onto other goods meaning that their might once again be room for high street food shops, assuming of course that meanwhile the shops haven't all been turned into flats :(

You should try the one on Guildhall Street. They will order things in for you - still a little bit creepy but best of a bad situation.
Beautiful Planet has some odd bits and pieces in too. Do you go to the Vegan Society meetings?

There's a really good hfs called single step in lancaster which is worth a visit. They do a few of the taifun tofus and sell loose spices and grains and stuff. Its in town so easy to get to if you go by train.

If you drive or fancy a bit more of an adventure you should head to Unicorn in Chorlton in south Manchester. It is a tram ride out of the city but worth it as its a full blown vegan grocery store.

Failing that the new big Waitrose on the Capitol Centre has some bits and bobs like tofu weiners and smoked taifun.

One of the girls from my shop actually works in Single Step, and I haven't been! Disgraceful.

I've heard a lot about Unicorn Grocery, I'll have to check it out. I need my bf to have a car so I can feel superior about not driving but not have to lug shopping home on public transport!

I reckon I'm going to have to brave the creepy shop!
