I am going to see Newsies on May 5th at the Neederlander which is on W 41st St. between 7th & 8th. Anyone know of vegan options around there? I looked on google maps but everything seems to be too far to walk. I'm also celebrating my 30th bday this night so I want some place that is a real restaurant not just grab and go or sandwiches.

Thinking of Blossom or Candle 79 and then just taking a cab to the show. I've never been to either and I'm sure I would be happy with both, but any suggestions would be great!

Also really hoping I can fit Lula's in on this trip too, but I'm not sure we will have enough time. Last time I was there is was December and freezing cold but we went anyway.

Blossom is really easy for pre-theatre dinner because it's right near the 8th Ave CE line, 2 stops to the theatre pretty much. I always eat at the Maoz at 43rd and 8th, so that's really easy, and there's Zen Palate nearby but it's bland not so special food. I'd go with Blossom and take the subway.

I am trying to dig through all of the NYC threads as well. I'm sure and I know all the vegan places have been talked about in here somewhere!

The burgers at V-Note are making my mouth water just from looking at the menu!

Thanks RJ!

As vegan friendly as NYC is as a whole, the Theater District is hard for us vegans! The best option I have found right in that area is Queen of Sheba, an Ethiopian restaurant. It is located on 10th Ave and 46th Street. It's not vegan or even vegetarian, but you can eat very well there as a vegan.

What is up with that! I guess the real estate is really high and its too much of a touristy area.

Probably a combo of both, I'd imagine. All the chain restaurants that have flooded the area in the past decade/decade and a half are certainly an indicator of that, as well as being not much help to us vegans. Anyway, enjoy your trip! (And NYC street pretzels are vegan, remember that!)

Mmmmmm pretzels!

I think we are going to try Tacocina. Being that it is cinco de mayo. It has great reviews and vegetarian/vegan options.

Did NOT know the pretzels were vegan! I just assumed they weren't! Soooo exciting!
Gracia how long will you be there for? Would you have time Sunday to go to Lula's?

I am driving up Saturday morning with a friend and we are staying over night at another friends place in north Jersey. Then driving back home on Sunday. So I wont be in the city for Sunday.

I wish I could fit it in, but I dont think its going to happen.

Tacocina seems to be closed down, when I called to make a reservation the number was out of service. But I wound up finding a place called Mi Nidito that was great! They have a huge vegetarian menu and it says right on the menu that they don't use lard in their rice and beans. It was an awesome place to eat at on Cinco De Mayo. Lots of enthusiasm and loud happy cheering going on. I think I ate a bowl of guacamole the size of my head. It was really great food.

Bumping up this thread!

My sister and her fiance are staying in NJ this weekend but stopping into Manhattan on Sunday just to have lunch with me and my boyfriend and want to meet up somewhere near Port Authority (ew) since they're taking a bus. I will be the only veggie in attendance so I'm hoping for something omni-friendly that will offer me more than a sad salad - although the rest of the crew is pretty open-minded with veg food.

Is there anything new and exciting in the west 30s-40s that you fine folks know of? Aren't there a bunch of Thai options on 9th Ave somewhere or am I making that up? I'm also thinking about Mi Nidito on 8th and 51st but I'm not sure if they'll want to walk that far. Throw some ideas at me!

Mi Nidito was really good!

But I just went Joe Allen on 46th st and that was great too! They have one veg dish, its a curried veggie stew with brown rice. Really tasty! And then I had fresh fruit and tea for dessert.

LPQ is always easy since there are tons of them in the city. We had lunch their the same day, I had vegan chili and salad.

There's soy frozen yogurt at tutti frutti on 52nd and 8th. I had pretty good thai food right around there recently, too.

I like blockheads on 50th between 8th and 9th. They don't have a separate veg menu but they have beans and tofu, plus they carry daiya and vegan sour cream (if you're on that sort of thing).

I also went to some Italian place on 7th with my mom that had a few vegan items. I think I got seitan parm (but I think I like blockheads more).

Also for dessert, kyotofu!! Their soft serve is awesome!

Thanks for the suggestions! I love Blockheads! I can't believe I forgot about them. I've been to Mi Nidito before too and sometimes I like it better, atmosphere-wise, but I do like how at Blockheads you can adapt almost anything to be vegan.

I'll check out Italian and Thai options too. I'll be scouring MenuPages all day, ha.

And Blockheads it was! They are delightfully un-crowded on a Sunday afternoon. Probably because it's winter.

Also: it looks like Mi Nidito moved to 9th Ave. I'm curious what their new space is like.
