happy jo, I want to say you'll be fine(and I've eaten slightly old winter squash before) but then I think of that awful gross food porn pic w/the moldy insides. So just prepare yourself first incase it isn't a good squash.

Yep. I haven't had that experience, but I have had squash that was pretty dry on the inside but seemed normal on the outside. I guess you could probably tell by the weight, but I'm not that good at judging normal weight for squashes.

The mushrooms I had smelled really strongly like iodine. I didn't dare eat them.

I had a yellow bell papper that looked weird and brownish-speckled inside. It smelled okay though, so I grilled it, and it tasted fine.

I think vinegar and other fermented foods basically keep as long as you need to use them up. Especially if you store them in the fridge. They keep really long in my experince and I've never had a bottle go bad on me.

Just look out for weird smell and change in consistency, colour etc.

I had a bottle of acv go bad on me after about a year once! It turned to the consistency of syrup and got really cloudy. Blech.

I soaked some rice (with a little bit of other grains+beans, but mostly rice) overnight last night with the hopes of cooking it for breakfast in the morning. When I started cooking it, the gas in my stove (er, hot plate) ran out after 5 minutes but I had to go to work and didn't have time to buy more until I got home at 10pm. Now the mixture is cooking, but it was left to soak for 21 hours and was partially heated a bit. Is it ok, or should I dump it? My heart cries at the waste...

If it was heated, then left at room temp, I'd toss it. If you refrigerated it before going to work, it's probably ok.

Probably not a good idea. Even 8 hours at room temp would be questionable. A hot car would be a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Plus, my guess is it isn't going to taste so fresh after being semi-cooked for that long.

No. I see stomach cramps in your future if you do.

I wouldn't! Anything perishable left in a hot car is probably not good to eat!

Personally, I wouldn't risk it.

I'm getting stomach cramps just thinking about it! Yeah, with the olive oil and tahini sitting there in the heat for so long, I would ditch it just to be on the safe side.

I keep having lettuce turn a bit pink around the edges (not furry looking stuff, just pink). I usually throw it out, but it still looks OK otherwise and is pretty crisp. Toss it or keep it?

Yep, it's just discolouring as it's wilting. Don't eat the pink/brown bits, but the green and crispy bits will still be fine.

Thanks...though I'd have a hard time not eating pink bits as it seems pretty sporadically spaced on lots of the lettuce that I chopped up.

Ha, I ate the hummus! No cramping. Stomach of steel.

Okay, I have a new one. A noodle box that I ordered 2.5 days ago. It's been in the fridge. Rough contents are rice noodles, tofu, hot peppers, broccoli, some other veggies, cilantro, and a spicy coconut sauce. I'm sure it's probably fine but it is kind of freaking me out that it is in a takeout box, rather than sealed tightly.

I would eat it. I've kept takeout in the boxes for up to 3.5-4 days without issues.

I'd heat it up really hot, for as long as possible without burning it to a crisp, then eat it.

I started eating it, and it definitely didn't taste off, but the noodles were disgustingly coagulated and it didn't taste good at all. I should have heated it, but we don't have a microwave and I just finished dishes.

Leftover plain brown rice from a Japanese restaurant. It sat in my car for about 3 hours in about high 50s-60ish degree weather until I got back home and now has been sitting in my fridge for 4 days.

Nope. You never know how long it was kept warm/sat at room temp at the restaurant. My limit is 1 day for take out rice.

Hummus that was sealed and in the fridge and doesn't expire until 04/25 taste a bit zippy and tangy. Which peas me off! I really don't want to throw this whole container away. Am I gonna die if I eat it anyway?

Have you had that variety before? Some hummus is more tangy than others.
