For years I've been wanting to buy seed bombs, but now that I've come across some very compelling seed ball 'recipes' I thought I might literally get my hands dirty and try to make some at home.
Has anyone ever tried to do this, is it very time-consuming, complicated or expensive?
You need seeds (obviously), compost or flower soil and clay powder. Do you think I could use healing earth instead of clay?
I was toying with the idea of buying a so-called seed ball construction kit, but then again – they are pretty expensive, too.

Share your ideas …!

There's no need to get a kit! You can make them yourself for much cheaper and make more than you could with a kit. Plus, you get to choose which seeds you use. I am not sure what healing earth is but the clay is there to keep the ball together (until it lands on the ground), I'm not sure if that helps.

Hey there,
thanks for your reply! So have you tried it yourself? If yes, what was the outcome (blossoms & blooms ...)?
I think I'm going to opt for clay, after all. It's far cheaper than healing earth, it's just that I don't have it to hand.

can I be that guy and raise my hand to ask "what are seed bombs"? Do you just plant a variety of seeds in a hole and see what comes up?

I went to a workshop a couple of years ago and we made clay seed bombs. I threw them all (just 3) around in San Francisco so I don't know what the outcome was, but our recipe was something like 5:1:1 (clay, compost, seed) if I remember correctly. It was put on by a really cool urban farm.

My friend gave away seed bombs as favors at her kid's bday party last year. They were made of recycled paper and she bought them on etsy. Really cute idea, but we put ours in our yard and they didn't grow.

I tossed out several into empty lots yesterday with a cycling group yesterday. We need rain, but I'll report back how they turn out. I wasn't involved in making them but they contained clover and wildflowers. They look like hard falafel balls.

Sorry, I should have explained ... Well, you already know about the ingredients by now, but in case you wonder where that nasty word 'bomb' comes from: http://www.guerrillagardening.org/ is the address.

last year instead of chocolate, for easter someone i know gave out seed bombs that were wrapped up in cellophane and looked just like chocolates (ferraro rocher type). i put one in my yard and got some cherry tomatoes.
she told me she just used yard dirt with a little clay in it.

Sweet idea! Thinking of Christmas, seed bombs might make nice baubles, too.
