Ye gods. Those donairs...Actually, that was the first thing on my mental "pro" list. Before anything even remotely practical, i thought of the wooden monkey donair!
Whatever else happens, I'm home for a visit in the fall, and we should totes hang out. I haven't lived heffalax since the WAY pregan days, so the fact that there's so much veg stuff is amazing!

I'm going to Turkish Delight soon. I'm glad to hear there's at least one vegan dish. Yay! Halifax rules.

Turkish delight has a few different things, sadly their rice has butter/ghee. But there spreads are soo good.

It's like you people are reading my mind. Spouse and I are thinking about moving to Halifax and we have no idea what that would be like. But you are making it sound awesome.

Seriously, though, sell me on Halifax. (I mean, you don't have to do a hard job of it...)

F'r example, is the vegan community very active there? Is biking and walking feasible in terms of main modes of transport? And winter? Please tell me a Haligonian winter is much more doable than rural Quebec one.

I would move back just for that dragon roll at Minato. And the cheesecake at Heartwood.

For selling Halifax, see my list on page one of this thread. The activist scene there is one of the best I've ever encountered. It's a wonderfully vegan friendly city, great food, great DIY scene, the music--I love it. The winters aren't that bad, certainly not Quebec bad--the ocean keeps things more mild and less dry. I lived near Quinpool and biked and walked everywhere downtown and in the North End, only using my car for trips out of the city. I didn't find it that cheap in terms of housing, but it's certainly less expensive than T-dot or Montreal. The local foods scene is stunning. Move there.

Plus Sweet Hereafter is a new cheesecake shop which does a different vegan cake every day using real sugar.

Cool! My personal goal is open a vegan bakery. I think Halifax would be a better fit for it than here, that's for sure!

I have not been to the Heartwood since their switch from buffet to menu style. Must try. Any opinions?

I have been loving the Mid East Food Center. Lots of vegan options and inexpensive. Tabouli, bean salad, pita, hummus, mango juice... yes please!

I haven't been to the MEFC in a while.
The Heartwood special has never let me down, and since it's always different it's my favourite. But the brunch is great! Scramble, roasties, waffles etc all good.

The portabello sandwich or TLT or Taco Salad are my other standbys.

My pick is always one of their bowls with spicy peanut sauce. The roasted yams they put in the bowls are smashing.

And the cheesecake. Always the cheesecake.

I am not actively involved in any vegan community, sadly, so I can't address that. I don't have a lot of time away from my kids right now. I used to be very actively involved in the homeschooling/unschooling community, as well La Leche League, so if that's something that interests you then you should know there are a lot of us here.

Biking and walking are completely feasible for transportation, if you choose your location carefully. I wouldn't live in Clayton Park or Sackville and try to bike downtown though I am sure some do.

I live in downtown Dartmouth and when we bought our house we were looking at houses only within a certain radius of the ferry/bridge and close to buses. My husband doesn't drive and I wanted to go without a car for a while, which we did for 6 years. Our house is a 15 minute walk/5 minute bike ride to the ferry. I often run to work across the bridge and into downtown, and there is a separate bike lane on the bridge. If you like to bike or hike for fun there are many many trails in the city or within a short bus/car ride (the buses have bike racks on the front).

I lived for 2.5 years in Ste. Anne de Bellevue and the winters here are much more moderate - that's the only comparison I can give you to Quebec. In that area of Quebec at least, it gets colder in the winter and hotter in the summer. The winters are variable, though - some years lots of snow and some not too much. THis past winter my youngest son got a new sled and only got a chance to use it once.

The farmer's markets are great - two in Halifax (one is the big new fancy one) and Dartmouth's has grown greatly since I started going there 11 years ago. I have no trouble finding almost any ingredient I need at the variety of grocery/bulk/ethnic/specialty stores here.

I know a few people who bike from clayton park.

Oh yeah, I'm sure there are lots who do, I just wouldn't call it "bikable" unless I knew your degree of acceptable risk :-) The distance is not the issue.

Just booked our flight to Halifax.

Unfortunately we will have only a few hours on july 3rd.
(We will spend two weeks on Cape Breton Island, near Louisbourg ... and near Cabot Shores)

What shouldn't I miss by no means?

Help me source vegan marshmallows in NS please. Ideas? My kid has all sorts of campfire things upcoming!

Heartwood cafe,sweet hereafter for vegan for vegan cheesecake, world tea house and sushi at be-well cafe or minato's for the vegan dragon roll no egg. Formosa's is brilliant crazy faux meat but Dartmouth may be hard to make on 2 hours unless you just want to go there.

Seaside farmers market is also brilliant.

But time wise heartwood,be well's and sweethereafter are all on quinpool rd. Ireland 32 will make a soymocha to knock your socks off.

Haven't seen any but planet organic maybe a good starting point or maybe superstore? There are recipes online to make your own and someone was making marshmallows in the old market they might do vegan ones.

Are you on Facebook? We have an NS vegan association group with lots of members, they may remember more.

I don't believe you can buy vegan marshmallows in HRM, at least I haven't seen them. With camping season coming up, though, PO may decide to get some in. I bought some Dandies in Calgary last year and they were delicious plain and roasted.

ETA - I am going to Planet Organic later this week and I will ask and let you know. Mmmm, dandies.
