Help me PPK- I'm headed to Austin in 2 weeks for a romantic TX vacay with my guy and I need vegan suggestions... He's an omni, but working over time to make sure I eat well in Austin, and as we drive back to LA, I know you guys can help make the planning a little easier than just deciding to eat every meal at Maoz (which I totally wouldn't mind...)!
Thanks for all your pro-tips!

LazySmurf's guide is awesome. Here's another good restaurant guide that's pretty up-to-date. Counter Culture and Captial City Bakery both opened since then, and Nomad Dosa and Vegan Yacht have moved locations. Otherwise it's a pretty comprehensive list. http://www.vegaustin.com/img/files/cok_ ... in_web.pdfCall before going to Vegan Yacht as their hours are pretty unreliable. It's honestly very low on my list of go-to spots though.

Yay! Thanks Lazy Smurf! I'm mostly going to visit friends / do whatever fun they want to show me, but none, and I mean none of them are vegan, even between meals ;) , and my BF, whom I'm going with is also not vegan, so I thought I'd do some serious research on yums before I left!

It's probably going to be pretty hot so prepare yourself! Also I have another list that's vegan options in the whole city. Just don't let your friends drag you to torchy's it's a really popular taco trailer all over town but they are not at all vegan friendly and there are much better taco spots in town.

Tell me where to go thats amazing please Counter Culture and Capital City Bakery are what people are excited about now, but neither is walking distance from Emo's. You'd have to hop a bus. Right by Emo's, try Hot Dog King, El Sol Y La Luna, or Jim Jim's Water Ice. Koriente is right there, too, but it's a bit too healthy for my tastes. Sort of near where Vegan Yacht used to be, there's a food court with a ton of vegan friendly trailers. Arlo's (amazing bacon cheez burger), Me So Hungry, Via 313 (Detroit style pizza), Fire & Soul, and Cool Haus (ice cream sandwiches). The food court is just outside Cheer Up Charlie's, the veg bar. Further down 6th street, there's also East Side King at the Liberty Bar which is fancy schmancy cart food. The cart is part-owned by Paul Qui, who's sort of a big deal right now. Short version: get a bacon cheez burger at Arlo's

I'd say the best thing is to head over by cheer up Charlie's, that's where Arlo's is but there are trailers all over that block are great. Fried avocado balls at fire and soul! Plus all those trailers are open way late. Mr. Natural is down on ceaser Chavez and I like their Mexican breakfast. Counter Culture is further down and has more healthy style stuff but they have comfort food too. You have to pilgrimage to cap city bakery to see Ppker Kristen/sugar skull/ inmypies new capcity bakery trailer.
Also right downtown by red river and open late is chi'lantro a Korean taco truck that makes awesome tofu tacos. That's my favorite post show snack.

This thread is the best. I live here and haven't been to most of these places! Totally going to remedy that. We need to get out more.

Adam Crisis wrote: thanks! the last 2 years I have been lazy and not checking out new spots when Im there. Going to change that this year I feel that way when I go to chicago! I go a few times a year but how can I not just eat st the Chicago Diner? But Cheer Ups is just a block further then where the vegan yacht used to be and I think you might love all those places.

OK- we're talking "too healthy" on some of these options... I'm all about the the "too healthiest," so where do I find that. My SoCal / ED recovering asparagus is afraid of Frito Pie!

Most places are super healthy. My fave in that category is counter culture, but you have to try Juiceland, it's the best smoothie/juice place in the world. A lot of folks love the macrobiotic restaurant Case de Luz, but it is too bland for my taste. Beets Cafe is all raw and I love their Asian noodle salad. The Daily Juice is mostly raw and a neat place that also has the all vegan soft serve Sweet Ritual Ice cream parlor. The Whole Foods on 6th and Lamar is also the cooperate headquarters and humongous. There are a million different choices inside and they have a lot of Engine 2 options and a raw vegan stand behind the produce section.
That's the main ones I can think of off hand. And don't be afraid of frito pie! It's just chili with fritos and nooch! My favorite version is at wheatsville co-op, it's delicious and totally Texan.

Definitely try a Red Rabbit Cooperative Vegan Bakery donut! And I'm not just saying that because I'm part of red rabbit! :) Get one at numerous coffee shops around austin, or visit the HOPE farmer's market on Sundays on 4th and waller. Or wheatsville food co-op. Seriously, best vegan donuts ever!! Even Isa and Terry thought so! Yay worker's vegan co-ops!!

If you go to Wheatsville, the cinnamon rolls and donut holes are on the table in front of the deli. I was looking for the cinnamon rolls in the bakery case and missed them at first.

Apple fritters > cinnamon rolls. Though I think the maple pecan donuts are best of all.

They're really good about listening to what their customers/owners wants. Or come visit me at the HOPE farmers market and get some every sunday! Yay! SO happy to hear you guys like our stuff! :)

You guys, Mr. Natural was a game changer. So. forking. Good. In the end, I wound up mostly at places my guy knows the chef / bartender at, so I had more custom meals from omni kitchens than anything... And one incredibly generous home-cooked dinner party, all vegan, courtesy of his friends. Never have I ever felt so welcome. God, I love Texas. This trip made me less ashamed of the fact that it's secretly where I'm from, even if I grew up in LA :)
