Thank you so much for the offer! My mom is there now taking care of them, so they should be all set. They got to take baby home last night after a week of being in the hospital. Hopefully they'll get some rest now.

Born and raised in Calgary, 7 years vegan, but new to this forum. Who knew there were other vegans in this city? (well, of course there had to be given the growing number of restaurants but I don't personally know any).

Sorry if I'm hijacking the thread, but I'm coming to Calgary for a conference at Mount Royal in October--I'll be there for a few days (at least): what vegan/vegan friendly restaurants are a must?

Erm.....the coup and maybe Buddha veggie (is it still buddha "veggie"?). Avoid the cafe gratitude knock off..the folks there are so incredibly rude/mean.

I recently asked some friends of mine, who travel around much more than I do, about vegan places, and they had pretty much the same experience. They even went out of their way to look up the name (because they had forgotten) to tell me to avoid it.

They were awful to us, too, when we were in Calgary last summer. There were three of us and they messed up every single thing we ordered. There were three employees on the floor and only a few other people in the restaurant. It took forever to get the food. They did not apologize for screwing up, in fact they implied that it was our fault ("oh, *soy* cappuccino, you should have said" when of course I did when I ordered). It was one of the worst restaurant experiences I have had.
To make up for it, we went to an Ethiopian place in Kensington later (forget the name). The people there were lovely and the food was delicious.

There’s two Ethiopian restaurants in Kensington, Marathon and Blue Nile, both are really good, although the service is a little slow. There’s also Café Koi, which has a good selection of vegan dishes, Famoso Pizza, which has vegan pizza (you can add Daiya), and plenty of Indian restaurants (I love Moti Mahal, although it’s pretty pricy). The Community Natural Foods downtown has a cafeteria, which is great for lunch, plenty of hot and cold options. Buddha’s Veggie Fusion has great Chinese food, just make sure you ask for the veggie menu. You can get falafel just about anywhere but the most kick asparagus one I’ve had is at Falafel King downtown. There’s new place called Madly Organic Café on 17th Avenue which I’ve heard has vegan options, but haven’t been there myself. That’s all I can think of off the top of my head, but there are plenty more options out there.

As mentioned, the Coup is amazing, and I am also a big fan of the bowls at Cafe Koi. Famoso is pretty delicious as well. Buddha's Veggie is great, but pretty heavy (typical of 'Chinese' food though, greasy and gluten-heavy).

I loved Marathon!
The Coup is definitely a great place. But go early because they don't take reservations and you'll likely have to wait. :)
I really like Open Sesame on Macleod Trail too. It's just your typical make-your-own-stir-fry restaurant, but there are great options and there is a binder clearly listing which sauces are vegan.

I went to cafe gratitude in kensington today (though wary from your warnings, I was feeling rather dissociated and bisque-y from lack of food while eyeing every garbage can I passed in case I gave in to the urge to vomit - it was 3 and I hadn't eaten since breakfast). While they were a little short and off the cuff in dealing with their customers I thought their food was good and as long as you tried to be as straightforward and clear as you could be things seemed to go well. I can see how they might not deal too well with a mixed up order though as they were a little rude. As long as you're not expecting good service I'd say it's alright. I'll definitely eat there again because... well... I can.
