I thought I'd give EB sticks a try (hoping it was just the tub that was gross) but nope...I now have sim-Toll House FISH cookie bars. So gross. In fact, as soon as I took them out of the oven, the whole house stunk like the pier. I have sent a strongly worded letter to Earth Balance. Unacceptable!

Dammit. I admit, I thought maybe everyone was just being overly sensitive about the alleged weird-tasting EB, but I have now experienced it for myself, and I am bummed. It's not just a fishiness - there's also a distinctively plastic-y taste to the last two tubs of regular EB I've had.
I guess I'll be making my own vegan butter from now on. Oh well.

I'm glad those vegan butter recipes exist, but I know quite a few omnis who use EB too, and they will just go back to dairy butter. And, damnit, I don't want to make my own butter.

I have no plans to make my own butter. Just buy the whipped kind; it's still perfect!

The whipped kind can't be used the same way for baking, I thought.
I've been making my own butter. It takes 10 minutes and is really easy and tasty! It tastes worlds better than EB ever did, in my opinion.

the whipped can be used for baking, but it needs to be measured by weight. 8 oz=1 cup of non-whipped butter. (if someone has a scale and some whipped, can you measure some out and tell us how much volume 8 oz equals? i'm assuming it's somewhere between 1 cup + 2 tbsp and 1 1/4 cup.)

I do have the whipped now (which is great), but I want sticks for baking and frosting! Although the Tablespoons on those sticks were never labeled properly anyway, so it was always kind of a guessing game for me.

Are there any other decent vegan butters out there? When I first went vegan there was only Willow Run and Spectrum, and they both tasted pretty horrid.

Becel makes a vegan margarine but it is a soft spreadable type like the rest of their tubs.

It's definitely vegan - it says vegan right on the package and that would be a big booboo in our litigious society: http://www.becel.ca/en_ca/products/vegan.aspxETA - I am referring to the Becel of course, not the Promise. Can you not buy Becel in the US?

And they don't have the vegan version like we have in Canada? That's so weird as there are ten times as many customers - not just vegans but people who can't or don't eat dairy. I wonder if it's to do with ingredient rules.

i have no idea. maybe they didn't feel the need for competing with earth balance? (and they might be aware that vegans in the US are more likely to avoid trans-fats, so they probably don't want to even bother.)

Trans fats are illegal in Canada, and I don't know what basis there is to believe that Canadians are less likely to avoid them, even if they were allowed there.

Also, Earth Balance is widely available in Canada.

are people having issues with this still? I've luckily not had a problem (I've switched from tubs to bricks due to all the baking I do) and no fishy fishiness yet.

I haven't really noticed much of a fishy taste until last night. I was making vegan hollandaise with The Vegg. Its pretty much just melted EB, vegg and lemon juice. all i could taste was fish, no matter how much more vegg or lemon I added. The fishiness just wouldn't go away, I had to toss it. I was super bummed to have wasted my precious vegg :(

I just received an email from EB asking for a vote in the VegNews best of contest. I certainly can't vote for them because of this issue. This might be a good time to tell EB to switch back to the original recipe and maybe just make a dedicated flaxseed margarine if they still think it's such a great idea.

i am so happy i thought to freeze 2 giant tubs from prior to the change. i just thought i was assisting myself with being lazy, but this reason is better.
p.s. i voted for miso mayo.
