This is an interesting short documentary (about 6 and a half minutes) about how mass protests and the energy crisis of the 70s led to the political will to integrate bike lanes into the cities in the Netherlands, and the far-reaching results of this policy. If you build it, they will come!

I know many of you cycle on the much less safe roads in America and I can only hope for you that this kind of change is on its way there.

Bike lanes are here, they just aren't integrated. Here, if you are lucky to get a bike lane, it will randomly end after three blocks. Also, cars will be confused and try to drive in it after they first put it in. Also, people (at least in my part of TN) still get kindof angry that people ride bicycles; for no reason, you will get yelled at.

Thanks for posting! I just left my college town that is actually pretty good about cycling but also experience people randomly getting mad and telling cyclists to get on the sidewalk. I just long for a bike culture so badly! Improves the environment, health, happiness, urban aesthetics and so much more!
