So my bf and I used to live in the Mission (long before we knew each other) and we're both missing it like crazy lately - so we're coming down for a weekend in July!
He was vegetarian while living there but I was omni - and even still, I know things have changed in the last five years.
So, where should we eat in the Mission? I do love the rest of the city, but we really only have two days and I want to spend most of that time going to favorite shops, drinking at old haunts, and sitting in the park. I see Herbivore's menu has changed and is getting some positive feedback. We'll of course be scarfing down as many burritos (Papalote) as we can. St. Francis Fountain looks good, and Source sounds like it could be a fun dinner. Oh, and I finally want to try Cha Ya. But are there any "don't-miss-this" places we should check out?
TIA!

Learn something new everyday. Dang. Also, go get some tasty baked goods at Arizmendi! Oh, and Escape From NY has vegan pizza now, though I still haven't tried it.

Escape from New York is decent, but if you've had daiya on a pizza before, you know what you're getting.

Rosamunde is great. They have 2 and sometimes 3 types of vegan sausage and roughly 800 beers. Go early to avoid crowds.
There's a Paxti's in Noe Valley and one in Hayes Valley if you want to try the hot new vegan deep dish. Jay's Cheesesteak has vegan seitan sandwiches that kick asparagus, and Bender's bar has some great vegan options on the menu.

Learn something new everyday. Dang. I haven't been there in awhile, but last time I was there not only did they have a few vegan sausage options, but the beans were vegan, too. If you get the combo plate with the sausage, beans, and salad, the default salad comes with cheese so just ask for it without (this was almost a year ago).

Udipi palace is awesome, the German bar on 16th and Valencia (can't think of the name) also has vegan sausages and a decent vegan tunafish salad sandwich.
Sunflower Vietnamese has a couple great options and truly mediterranean has a great falafel sandwich.

Mission Chinese Food! Not to be missed.
I also second Gracias Madre, the German bar on 16th (vegan tuna melt=delicious!), and Sunflower.

In the Mission we also like Gracias Madre, which is owned by the same people (I think) who own Cafe Gratitude, which is still open in Berkeley and Santa Cruz. Millenium in San Francisco is fantastic, but you will need reservations.
Enjoy!
