Just stop. First of all, I assume that a lot of your friends/fans are already vegan. Second, if they're not, I don't know why you think shoving a picture of a dead animal in their face is going to make them do anything but want to punch you in the face, vomit a little, and probably unfriend you/unlike your page. That kind of 'activism', in my experience, rarely works.

Yeees. I hate that. It's like..anti-choice people that post pictures of fetuses. It's gross and not going to make me change my mind on my position.

My approach is to make people baked goods and whenever someone asks have a respectful conversation. Even if they ask questions like "but do you eat fish?". I actually had an awesome conversation with someone 3 times my age and by the end she said she would definitely decrease or eliminate meat from her diet. I don't discuss it with the kiddos I work with though....call be a bad vegan, but if you're being fed through a tube you shouldn't be made to feel guilty about the dairy you're consuming.

One time I did post a disturbing picture was of a hurt (not dead) cow during a rodeo event....mostly because I was getting pissed off at folks going on and on about how awesome the Calgary stampede is.

I'd say that I've definitely met vegans who were persuaded by way of gory pictures, so I suppose there's value in their existence. However, I fully stand with MBM in saying that people need to stop posting that shiitake on facebook and other sites where unsuspected long-time vegans like myself come across it and cry at work. There are ways to make those images available for people who are interested to see (FARM's Pay Per View program is a good example), without MAKING everyone look at them.

I totally watched factory farming Peta videos all on my own (and cried), but no one shoved a photo in my face while I was unprepared. Bloody, dead things and hurt things make me cry, that's kind of why i'm vegan. I wouldn't post huge pictures of someone smeared across a highway to warn people of the dangers of drunk driving or not paying attention to (motor)cyclists.

I don't understand why a vegan page would post something like that. I think it's unlikely that an omnivore would be following a vegan Facebook page and be all "WELP there was a gory picture so I'm vegan now!"

Agreed. That kind of stuff just makes people defensive if they aren't ready to hear that message.

If I post anything that might be offensive to someone, whether it's politics or veganism or whatever, I'll post the link. That way, if someone is interested, they can click it, but it's not blindsiding them in the middle of their news feed.

My therapist (who primarily focused on eating disorders) was in the same office building as some sketchy naturopathic docs.....who had a graphic image of a big chunk of human fat on the hallway near their office.

I prefer to post pics of incredibly adorable animals. I hope it works.

I agree with every single thing in this thread. It's important for footage and photos to exist of animal abuse, but posting them without warning on Facebook is not okay.

As far as being effective, I guess it depends on the audience, but graphic or gory can work. The NYC anti-smoking campaign that shows a woman who has lost her fingertips, had her extremities amputated etc as a result of her smoking has been the most effective one yet with teenagers. The pictures are really gory and all over the subways.

I have a ton of non-vegans on my FB page, and some have contacted me after I've posted things like the MFA or COK undercover investigations. But maybe those are different, they have a warning on, and no one gets surprised by them.

I read the comments on today's stupid FB picture and there seemed to be a theme of self-righteousness attached to those who wanted the photos spread far and wide. They wanted to PUNISH the bad people who still ate meat. Strangely enough, some of the comments reminded me of the things that Westboro Baptist Church members say about their protests.

Urgh, for serious. I have an online 'friend' who recently decided to go vegan and posts this dead animal stuff all the freaking time. Oh, and at the same time as moaning on about howwwww muuuuuuch she misses cheese. It does my forking head in.

I was that vegan at one point! A PPKer pm'ed me that she was going to defriend me and that the images were too graphic and I stopped posting them. Definitely reach out and say something. She may not realize how upsetting this is for other vegans.

Oh, that is a good point, bud! I had been wanting to, but worry about sounding like a douchebag, yaknow? I've been sending her recipes and the like of late but don't want to come off as a crasshole by bringing stuffs up. It's a tricky line to navigate!

I think coming from another vegan, it can be really useful. I know when I was posting graphic pictures, it was because I hoped that omni friends would see them and realize how bad things are. Hearing from someone who had been vegan longer and that I respected really helped me see that the very graphic photos were going to turn people off rather than open them up to investigating for themselves. Her pm was "I love you, and I think most of the stuff you post is great, but I find the very graphic photos really upsetting, and I'm going to have to defriend you if you're going to continue posting them."

A friend of mine has been posting videos about cruelty to wildlife for years. She is really involved in protecting gooses in NYC etc. But she still ate meat. I didn't call her out on her hypocrisy, just kept saying what a good job she was doing etc. And now she's going vegan! Its great to remember that all of us go vegan at our own pace, when we're ready.

I can't stand it. I am friends with mostly vegans and have had to block/hide some people I otherwise really like. If some people you're friends with on Facebook can be persuaded to go vegan by looking at some gory factory farming photos, you can probably find some more creative ways to engage them.

I've said this before, but I think posting about your awesome vegan life is way more interesting and will keep vegans and non-vegans alike from hitting the "hide" button.

Oh God. Someone just posted a picture of a dog that has been shot in the face asking for donations for her vet care. I am going to cry.

ME EITHER. Realistically, how many non-vegans like that page?

Also, seriously, just post links. Some omnivores will click out of morbid curiosity, and if they get snippy with you then you can say, "I warned you, if it bothers you that much maybe you should think about going vegan." Or something.

Also I found out that facebook is posting every time I comment on something to people who are subscribed to all of my updates, so by commenting on said photo I unwittingly shoved it into their feeds too. And I can't undo it.

I did totally call out an omnivore I know for posting animal cruelty pics. When I told him to cut the shiitake, his friends were all, "you can't hide from the truth, man," but shut up pretty damn quick when I said I'd been vegan for over 9 years.

Yeah, I mean, get out and do some real activism if you really feel so strongly that you have to turn people vegan. Posting crepe on Facebook might turn 1 or 2 people ever vegan. Statistically, it's a big waste of time and you're better off posting cat videos. And if you're someone who already does activism....get social skills and stop alienating people on the internet?

Yeah, that is the thing. I can kinda get the disconnect with people being omni and also getting all het up about animal testing and what not, I really can. I get it. I mean, I know it's ultimately bollocks, but I can *technically* pick apart whit yer on about and pretty much gather the perceived difference or whatever. But seriously, don't be bitchin' where the next post you're on about how forkin' fabulous that frickin beef burger at the Tikki Bar was. BARF.
