I'm watching Stephen Fry in America and he met with some Navajo people and they cooked for him, so I'm wondering if there are any Native American recipe books available?

I was thinking, and all veg*n recipe books are either colonial American, European or Asian by nation or Ethiopian. I really can't think of any ones from further-a-culinary-field.

Thanks!

Interesting idea! It looks like there are a bunch of veganizable recipes here in the veg section -

Ah cool, thanks! I'm always on the look out for recipe books "off the beaten track".

The Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian has a cafeteria that serves Native American foods, and there are usually several vegan options there. They've got the cafeteria arranged by region, with different stations serving foods from tribes in different parts of the country. They have a cookbook, but I haven't really looked at it too carefully -- I'd guess that it probably has at least a few vegan recipes. I don't know of any Native American cookbooks that are entirely veg*n.

I've been to the Hopi Cultural Center restaurant on the Hopi reservation in AZ. If I remember correctly, all of the main courses on the traditional part of the menu contained some sort of meat, but I think everything would probably be relatively easy to veganize. I do remember eating this ("Spread on hot, greased griddle or stone with palm of hand"), and I bet the other recipes on that site are pretty adaptable.

Navajo Tacos (recipe decidedly not vegan)have always appealed to me, but I've never had one.

Cool, thanks everyone. I'm not too worried about things being "naturally" vegan, as most European food is pretty meaty by default.

I've got a Setswana cook book that is both very meat-heavy and pretty veganisable. It's only as inauthentic as using veggie mince in bolognese or soy sauce in gravy and anyway, I'm not out to with authenticity points.

They are by no means authentic, but I've veganized a few things I grew up exposed to by my native friends in Alberta. Most successfully, fry bread tacos! I have been working forever on a zine of veganized Canadian cuisine and was getting some help from one of my friends with a couple of First Nations dishes.

Anyway, this is a great idea. Post your results!
