I just started a little business selling tamales. I think there is a definite lack of vegan tamales in San Diego and I wanna do my part help! I plan on selling on weekends at some of my regular/favorite bars--I know the owners and they are cool with it. Yeah, it's on the DL for now.

I'm also taking orders for the holidays and catering.

What fillings would you suggest I add to my menu?

This is what I have so far: http://yumtamales.blogspot.com/2010/10/ ... ritas.html

Those sound amazing and you seem to have a lot of fillings! The only thing I can think of to suggest is something tofu maybe. There's a vegetarian restaurant here that has tofu and sunflower seed tamales that are really good.

You are so badass and I wish you lived in the Coachella Valley. We would be regulars.

The only flavor I can think of is a straight up bean tamale.

There's this lady that sells roadside here in town and she makes her tamales with vegetable shortening, but of course has various meat and cheese fillings.
I've stopped several times to see if she had any that might POSSIBLY be vegan, but no such luck. Today she had a cardboard sign ADDED to her regular sign... "Plain bean and roasted pepper tamales, no cheese"... and they were indeed ALL VEGAN. She only had two left, she said they'd been her most popular sellers all day. So stoked.

My favorite has always been green chiles and jack cheese, so boring and easy but I love them. When I used to help my aunt, everyone would be picking meat out of the bowls and eating them and I had to sit there like a dork until she did the chile/cheese ones- then I would get my chile fix. When my cousin was vegan she would make us all vegan tamales, but he sold out this summer so I bet that game is over.

I don't live anywhere near San Diego or I'd be getting in my car right now to buy your tamales. Those flavors sound amazing. I can't think of anything to add! But I would like to suggest that if you haven't already posted about this in the square you should do so. That way people who live near you or are visiting near you and are looking for good eats can find you. Oh, and you should also post in the mall under the "your products" subforum.

Cool! There used to be a woman who sold vegan tamales at the Hillcrest farmers market that I loved. I don't know if she's still there, but she had a really good sundried tomato one. I will send your website to my sister! She's always up for awesome vegan tamales.

Thanks for the great ideas everyone.

I thought of making bean tamales, but wasn't sure how they would turn out. I'm gonna experiment later and once I perfect it, maybe I'll do some porn-ing!

I'm excited! I wish there was a heaven called "Vegan Tamales shop", but there isn't. So maybe I have to build it and if I do, maybe they will come.

It looks like the blog hasn't been updated in 2 years but there is an email address.

When I was younger, my family used to sell tamales for scholarship money. They weren't vegan though.

I like that you went traditional and new. To many times places go for out there flavors when people just want the classics!

I never noticed this thread when it was new, but her tamales sound AWESOME. I am inspired. Next time I make tamales, I need to try some of those out.

Hi guys, I'm still around. I abandoned that site and focus more on my new one: http://www.luckyboomvegan.com. Hit me up! :-)

My old user account on here was giving me problems and would allow my password so I created this new user account. I am the same person who posted the ad about tamales.

Dessert tamales?? I've never even had regular tamales but that sounds like a great idea.
