Do you plant those outside as soon as they get big enough? I plan to grow some rapini for fall. Also spinach, they don't like the heat. Is it time for that now or is it too early? Summer has just began.

yeah, the article i was reading said to transplant them in mid-july. i think the point is to get them started and big enough that they have a chance to grow and not wilt immediately when they get outside. i'm not sure where you're located, but the article i was reading is geared towards the northeast: http://www.seedlibrary.org/wp/sow-now-w ... -for-fall/(i just realized this should have gone in the chat thread, not the harvest)

Augh! You guys! I so wasn't ready for 2012. I mean, I'll get some stuff... but damn. Maybe I'll start taking pictures of my herbs to feel like a cool person again.

Mars, it's been so cold in PDX most stuff has just languished until now. I still haven't planted corn, and field mice got most of the assorted greens and carrots I planted from seed (just as they germinated,) so I'm replanting. Some beets made it through, but I usually plant more of them and carrots, parsnips, fennel, etc. in mid-July for fall/winter harvests.

Cool, good to know. I wish I was better about pictures though, I'd love to have shown a before and after shot for this backyard of mine. I mean, I have been planting and gardening a lot, but mostly weeding and putting in ground covers. Once I'm done this patio I'll show a picture, I'm quite happy with how it's turning out, other than the lack of veggie space.

Sauteed some of my chard today! Soooo fresh and yummy. It needed hardly anything, just some sliced garlic and a dash of salt.

Jewels from my garden It was so peaceful picking them in the evening, it was quiet but for the birds singing, and the bugs weren't out yet. Making jam tonight after picking some more.

So far we've picked lots of lemon balm, thyme, oregano, chives, kale, radishes, spinach, and strawberries. Last year the slugs got all my berries. This year I got them all. Yay!

Here's my share of the harvest from the school garden I volunteer at. Dirty carrots are my favorite!

I harvested 4 beets yesterday, roasted the beets and steamed the greens, well washed of course, for lunch today. I was just about to shovel some into my mouth and realized that something was weird. Even though I washed each leaf separately I missed a caterpillar, oh no. But luckily I didn't eat it. Has that happened to you? However careful you are you can miss something.

I had the same happen with kale- had it all washed up, looked in the bowl, and somehow I managed to miss 3 of them.

I tend not to plant many red lettuces as baby slugs blend right in with the color. I had one fall out of a sandwich once, right as I was lifting it up to take a bite. Yuk.

Picked 10 lbs of summer squash today, two giant ones and two warty ones, all yellow. They just started coming in last week but now they're growing fast.

Blackberries! These are just the first few to turn purple. There are sooo many red ones on the bush, I can't wait to pick them all. I'm posting some pics of the bush in my garden thread.

My first little bunch of carrots ever! And this season's first tomatoes, plus purple & yellow stringbeans and chard.
