Has anybody ever visited this area? My partner and I will be going to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (and the surrounding areas) in July. Any suggestions on the best place to camp, must-dos, places to eat? Thanks!!

My dad grew up there and he moved back there when I was a kid, so I've spent many many vacations in the U.P. I haven't spent a lot of time, just a brief stop on my droves through, in the pictured rocks area though. Eating out is pretty limited, in my experience, except for a few places in Marquette and nothing that I've had has been that spectacular except at a restaurant that closed. Marquette does have a lovely food co-op though! I definitely recommend stopping there and stocking up on foods if you'll be flying into Marquette or driving through there. The Upper Peninsula is so beautiful and has such a special place in my heart, I hope you love it!

The pictured rocks is a beautiful area. I would be sure to bring some kind of bug repellant and not wear white, since there are flies in those woods that seem to want to land on white things and bite. I don't have suggestions of where to camp since I've only been there for day trip type stuff, so can't be more helpful.

pasties are the favored food up there. they are a savory hand pie. unfortunatly the veggie ones are usually veg/cheese. if you find a small family owned shop, see if they will make you one with potato, rutabaga, onion and carrot without the meat to pick up the next day. I was offered that opportunity somewhere in the UP once but didnt take them up on the offer as i was passing through. at the very least, get the postcard with the pasty recipe on the front. the recipe is tasty and easy to veganise. hopefully you haven't already left yet and are reading this in time!

I veganized a recipe from one of these for the pasties that I normally make, and they are quite delicious, if you are looking for something to eat to get into the theme of your UP trip, haha http://www.hu.mtu.edu/vup/pasty/recipes.htm
