is that pronounced tequila?

I had a friend as a kid whose name is Andromeda. She's a well-adjusted adult now (a science teacher, I think), so she turned out okay. Actually her life is more together than mine... Drom is an okay nickname.

I'd name a kid Andromeda. It is the second best galaxy.

I've known a lot of lady Andis and Andies... Which would be an obvious out if a girl decided she didn't like being called Andromeda.

In a baby-name book I saw both 'Boleslaw', which sounds like you're mispronouncing a popular side dish, and 'Chesmoo' - that's apparently a native American word for (what will it be? Hope? Freedom?...) a a gritty texture. A very down-to-earth name! We have a soft toy called Chesmoo.

I am going to a wedding tomorrow- i don't know the bride's name, or the groom (this is the inlaws' family, which is apparently names-optional, as my husband doesn't seem to know any of their names, even his cousins and aunts). This being Brazil, nobody uses their real names, or maybe they're all João and Paulo, who knows. They go by their nicknames. The father of the bride is Shorty (Baixinho) and the grandfather of the bride is Tiozinho Ceguinho (little blind uncle, as he drives even though he is legally blind).
But the best is the mother of the bride is Niece. Funny for me, normal for portuguese. Except they call her "neepsie". Which puts me over the edge. ye be keepin to yer neeps and totally sweet tatties, brah, neepsie!

I'm a big fan of the name Andromeda. I'm going to show off my Harry Potter fangirl side, but there was a minor character with the name (sisters were Narcissa and Bellatrix), and I absolutely loved it. JK did a great family tree on the Malfoys a while back, and I absolutely loved seeing their celestrial naming theme go back five generations or so.

A friend works for a child health services department and says they have seen every name possible. And people do name their kids after cars, so there are quite a few Fords out there. I asked if they were named after Ford Prefect but he said "considering the siblings have car names too, I don't think so". There are also lots of names with numerous y's in there, I think Kylyjyne was the best example (pronounced Kylie Jane). There was also a Dystyny (Destiny).

Yeah, I've worked for a children's hospital for 24 years and I think I've heard it all by now. One trend I noticed is whatever female singer is current, there will be a lot of little girls (this phenomenon is mostly for girls) in the nursery with her name around the same time. I bet "Adele" is popular right now. WIth a ton of spelling variations.

There's a child here called 'Number 16 Bus Shelter'.

I think by anyone's standards, that's a fairly crummy name.

I love the name Adele, actually, so it's one I don't mind seeing on the charts because of a pop star! Want to say that the Tiffany (not one i love!) explosion in the 80s was closely related to the pop singer too.

No, Baby Name Wizard, I don't think the "so popular a century ago that it's making a comeback" argument is really valid for Amelia.
Although, I think in a way it's to do with timey-wimey stuff after all. ;)

My sister has ran against a girl named La-a in college.

I go to school with a guy named Woody. Seriously. Not his nickname. It's actually not that unheard of, but I just can't fathom what a parent could be thinking! Best case scenario, they love Toy Story. Worst case scenario, well... you know.

My freshman year there was a senior named Stormy Yochey. I don't know if it was a guy or a girl. The office people sometimes pronounced it like yolk-EE and sometimes like hockey but with a y.

My name is really common for girls my age, so I've always vowed that I'll name my future children something unusual but not something over which they'll be tortured*. My mom actually named me for a character on General Hospital. My sis was named after another character, but her name is way less common than mine!

I refuse to budge on Sirius. Although my mom and sister have already made fun of it, and he won't even be conceived for at least another decade!

A few years back, Bella, Edward, and Jacob were really popular baby (and dog!) names. Four guesses why, eh? I wouldn't mind being named after a literary character; I'd probably love it. But come on, name me after some bad-ass female lead! Not... Isabella Swan. #myopinion

@flava, I'm a big fan of the amount of thought Rowling put into names in the series! All the allusions, the Latin roots, the mythology. When I first understood the Draco connection, I geeked out hardcore.

I read somewhere once that Rowling said Sirius' middle name is Lee. So I was like, "Sirius Lee = future son! <3" and immediately the mom and sister were like, "Sirius Lee, seriously! You need to be serious!" "What if he's always cracking jokes?" *sigh* #hpproblems

Sirius Lee needs a twin sister named Shirley Yugeste.

I had a dream last night that Tofulish had a baby boy and named him Santa Lewis.

Okay, but it's still better than Kylyjyne or Dystyny.
