All I can say is that there is some really great scenic hiking near New Paltz. Lakes IN the mountains!

Stop for lunch in Worcester, MA. Eat some fantastic Middle Eastern food at Sahara on Highland Street. Order the Mezza for Two (varying the size for the number of people in your party, and substituting more baba g. or falafel or something for the labneh, but 1 person could have a pretty good time with Mezza for Two) and have a feast. On the way through, go to Ed Hyder's ( http://www.edhyders.com/ , on Pleasant Street which actually isn't) and pick up some of the best baba gannouj you will EVER eat. Sahara's is pretty good, but Ed Hyder's is FANTASTIC. Like, I still miss it years later. South of Worcester you're going to pass through Sturbridge, where, if you like historical stuff, you can go to Old Sturbridge Village and see some historical recreationy stuff.

I live in Worcester and second all of this; I'd also like to put in a plug for the Higgins Armory Museum (where I used to be the education program manager and head interpreter) http://www.higgins.org and the Worcester Art Museum http://www.worcesterart.org.

The Women's Studio Workshop in Rosendale, NY (really close to N. Paltz) is tops. I did a six month internship there in the mid 90s. They are big on book arts, papermaking and printmaking.
