I run and jog with my dog but I know that one of these days I'm going to trip over him and break all of my bones. He likes to keep running in front of me and I have to stop, get next to him and try again, only to have him run in front of me again. He's a pretty big dog and I try to get next to him and push him over a little bit but he eventually catches up and gets in front of me. I've tried keeping the leash shorter but when he can't keep up with me, I don't want to drag him. If you put a little music to it, we could be a hit comedy show.

I don't know if anything else can be done but I thought I'd ask and see if anyone has any ideas.

I love the PPK.
Do you have him in a no pull harness? That would prolly work.

i second a no pull harness.
we use a sporn no pull harness and it helped with walking our dog who pulled like crazy.
my husband occasionally jogs with him too.

not sure it will be the answer to your issue but it coudl be worth a shot

Pulling isn't the problem, it's him running in front of me that's the problem. He's a pretty big dog and I'm afraid I'm going to trip over him. I just need him to stay at my side.

Well, there are training classes to teach them how to walk to your side. Maybe you can look into the classes or at least the methods they use? The only pup I ever ran with was already trained when we adopted her.

some serious "heel" training i guess is what sounds like maybe you need.

i havent trained either of my dogs to heel but you could try having treats at your side and doling them out to keep your dog by your side. may want to try training it walking first just so it's easier

I second heel training. Proper heeling has the dogs shoulder even with your left leg - but you can teach your dog to heel in whatever position is comfortable. Have your dog sit at your side in the desired position - give a treat, keep dog on short leash take one step forward with left leg (if that's the side you keep your dog on) holding a treat right in front of the dog so that he stays at your side or slightly behind. Keep at it, treating every step as long as he stays at your side or behind- if he gets in front of you - bring him back to your side, have him sit and start again. Gradually take more steps between treats until he's weaned off. If you are consistent stopping every time he gets in front and treating when he gets it right he'll probably catch on quickly. When he's walking nicely by your side on a loose leash then increase up to a run. This method worked well for me - I hope it helps!

With my big boy I attach his harness to a one foot leash and then wear it on a running belt around my waist. It has worked wonders for teaching him to stay beside me and he has improved a ton even on his longer leash!
