Huh. That salmon DNA bit is interesting.

I'm actually not even sure if that is vegan or not. Is this an actual, real grey area? Not that I want to slather salmon DNA on my face...

It sounded to me like something I personally wouldn't worry about if it is truly just coming from the water, but I thought it was extra cool they included that in the email so people could be informed.

Yes, definitely. They know their ingredients! If only we could say the same for most companies.

I agree that their customer service sounds great! This is really useful information.

Salmon DNA, though, is weird. Ethically, I'm not sure care that much, but I've never heard of salmon DNA in skincare products. And I think the chitin could be changed to plant-derived pretty easily.

I would assume that the salmon DNA is being extracted from water in a salmon farm though, right? I doubt it would be from the wild. If it came from a salmon farm then I wouldn't consider it vegan, personally, but yeah that is really weird.

I could live without the fear that my skin products will come to life and learn to open doors.

Actually, since they get it from the water and probably from a fish farm, are they extracting the DNA from eggs and sperm?

So, it's not tested on animals? I loved that stuff.

yeah, "from the water" sounds suspiciously vague. Is it a homeopathic essence of fish DNA? heh

Yup, they're on the Leaping Bunny list and the Peta list.

Um, Salmon reproduce by releasing sperm directly in the water.

Which makes me wonder is salmon DNA is code for salmon sperm.

I was thinking that salmon dna was code for salmon sperm as well, so it's nice to know I'm not just a pervert, that there's a scientific basis to my assumption.

I was recently watching a nature show on Dutch television where biologists were doing research on this rare and hard to find fish in the rivers here, and were taking samples of the water to find DNA of the fish as proof that it was present in the waters. I think it was explained that they could do this because it was somehow secreted from the skin of the fish (fish slime?). If they could do this for a rare fish in river water, it certainly seems it would be easy in a farmed environment where mass quantities of one species are confined.

I would suspect they don't mean sperm, as I think sperm is hand collected (milked) on salmon farms.

This is all just speculation, of course. I'm curious what explanation they'll give.
