Which ones do you buy and how do you get your dogs to eat them? Mine won't eat theirs, even if I mix it in their food. It doesn't smell great so it probably doesn't taste great either. And they act like they're being punished when I put the food in front of them. I hate having to do this every month and hate seeing the uneaten food (with the medicine mixed in with it) which makes me think they're not getting enough heartworm prevention medicine in them.

The smallest dog will eat her's because it's a small pill. But the two larger dogs have to eat these huge pills that they don't like.

Thanks!

I think we use heart-guard as well, it's the round one vs the triangle/square ones (I think the various brands have specific shapes - at least the different brands our vet sells do). Ours usually take them with no issue, but for other things like medicine etc we've found that taking a little tofurkey and wrapping a pill works really well and they gobble it up. Or just smear a little peanut butter on it, but then toss it in their mouth so they don't just lick it off.

You're right, we use interceptor after all - had to check the receipt. I don't notice any treat like smell to them, but the dogs seem to like them.

we get generic heart worm pills from Pet Shed. julie weighs 50lbs & it's $17.00 for a (6) pack and $32.00 for a (12) pack.

edited to add: the pills we get for julie are really small & easily hidden in her food or a dollop of peanut butter. it's a little smaller than the size of my pinky fingernail.

we use tri-heart plus. they have a teeny tiny amount of pork in them, but at least they're not a chunk of meat. she thinks it's a treat. :-)

(we used to use heartgard, but they discontinued the meatless version.)

These pills are about as big and thick as an Oreo cookie.

I need to get new pills next month so I'll try the Heartguard if I can find it.

Thanks! PPK to the rescue. :)

My vet keeps a jar of heartguard samples - no medicine in them - on their counter so you can see if your dog will eat them before you buy. They also make a crunchy kind but I always get the soft ones and even Fawkes, food hater, esq., loves them.

Yeah, Chester loves the Heartguard chunk ones (are they liver flavored? ...yum) but the last ones he got look like normal pills and I have to hide them in his food. But if I put it like in the bottom of his food bowl at breakfast he doesn't notice at all.

we've been using interceptor for maia since we adopted her (4 years ago), but recently they discontinued/paused them because of some recall at the factory, so we had to switch to heartgard a month or so ago. she eats both pretty well; we just act like it's a treat first, and 95% of the time she goes for it.
