Here's my latest vegan pet peeve: restaurant menus that list "tapioca cheese" instead of just saying Daiya. Don't try to trick me into buying your $16 nachos, Candle Cafe.

Products that were once vegan and then without warning add animal products to their ingredients. Damn you, Spicy Thai Kettle Chips. :(

nooo! really?! that really sucks! i love those.

Whey. Why does it have to be everywhere?! Otherwise vegan products ruined by the last stupid ingredient. Do food companies get kickbacks from the dairy industry for taking their waste off their hands? Stupid whey.

haha, I actually just was looking the Candle Cafe menu the other day and thought the exact same thing. "Tapioca cheese...hmm...now that wouldn't be Daiya, would it?"

What's the problem with Daiya? (never heard about it before this thread; just looked it up on google and the website claims it's vegan)

It is vegan, it's just kind of funny to put "tapioca cheese" on a menu instead of just saying it's Daiya, especially for $16 nachos. It makes it sound like the cheese is homemade or something. I know, I know they might be listing it that way for people with soy allergies, but they could just say "soy-free Daiya".

Also, you will find that Daiya itself can inspire strong opinions, from both fans and detractors. I'm more of a detractor.

Vegans who have eating out options, then moan about them. Just kidding.

Maybe it's just me, but tapioca cheese doesn't sound very appealing either. If I wasn't sure it was Daiya, I would be imagining some concoction full of tapioca balls.

Yes, I read "tapioca cheese" and my first thought was "ewwww".

The soy-free one is the bestest. The others taste like air-dry clay. True Fact.

My biggest peeve is when people explode with rainbow orgasms every time they find something that they didn't realise was vegan, even if it tastes like poo and sticks. "OMG YOU HAVE TO TRY THIS DOG FOOD IT IS VEGAN BUT TASTES JUST LIKE MEAT! I WILL EAT IT FOR ALL MY MEALS MIXED WITH SPECULOOS AND CIDER VINEGAR BRAN FLAKES THAT ARE MADE OF OMEGA-3 SPIRULINA".

There's another tapioca cheese out there now! Lisanatti makes one now, too. Though it still contains soy, which sort of defeats the purpose, I think.

I was thinking the same thing. "Tapioca cheese" would turn me off while, if I knew it was just Daiya I'd be all for it. But not for $16. fork that, I'll make my own.

Orange juice with fish in it. what the fuk. drank some by accident a few months ago. Tasted just like it sounds.

I sooo agree. I'm not that impressed with cheezly.

I've never seen "tapioca cheese" on a menu but I have seen "soy cheese" on at least 3 different menus and been told it was Daiya when I asked.

Yeah, this peas me off too. I see it and think "Ah. It's probably FYH or something". Nope. Daiya. I guess to non-vegans all vegan alternatives are soy. God knows I've met enough people that seem to think vegans can't survive without soy milk and tofu.

Alos, Amy's Veggie Loaf. It looks SO freaking good yet one of the very last ingredients is honey. They know honey is not vegan and that vegans constitute a large portion of their consumers, yet they choose to use honey rather than agave or maple or brown rice syrup. Heck, even corn syrup would work! Probably cheaper too...

That's probably the thing. They think tapioca cheese sounds worth the cost (ie: housemade) while everyone knows Daiya is cheap. I think Daiya tastes like chemical waste so I'd be super annoyed if I spent $16 on a dish smothered in it.

I don't like the sentiment that vegans aren't allowed to have food preferences themselves, and should be happy with whatever we're given. When I went vegan, I didn't give up the right to have personal taste. I appreciate that Daiya is popular among a lot of people, and I totally support (in theory, not practice) the company, but I'm allowed to not like it.
