They've been sentenced to 2 years! Hopefully it's a lot less with time served. But holy shiitake.

it's only retroactive to March, so they're still going to sit there until March of 2014 afaik. Ridonkulous.

There is an upside, though! It seems this whole fiasco has both intensified Putin's opponents (to an international level, nonetheless!) and damaged his image to the rest of the world. kitten Riot behind bars has become more powerful than they ever could have had they been let free 5 months ago.

Also, it appears a few high-profile kitten Riot supporters were arrested earlier. If they get imprisoned that will just add more fuel to the fire.

This makes me so angry.

Quote:
Judge Syrova said Maria Alyokhina, 24, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 29, had offended the feelings of Orthodox believers and shown a "complete lack of respect".

What about the complete lack of respect that Putin and his government shows towards human rights?

I was glued to the Guardian liveblog all day at work. It's forking outrageous and yet of course I'm not surprised. This quote in particular from Judge Syrova's summing up is... just... I don't even:

Quote:
The court does find a religious hatred motive in the actions of the defendants by way of them being feminists who consider men and women to be equal.

Now gender equally is asserted, maintained by the Russian constitution where all people are proclaimed equal irrespective of their gender, race, nationality political affiliation and so on.

Any form of limiting rights of citizens based on their gender and so on are banned by the Russian constitution. Men and women have equal opportunities in Russia.

People who consider themselves feminists presently struggle for actual equality [for women]. These activities are not considered criminal in accordance with the Russian law.

At the same time, Orthodox Christianity, and Catholic Christianity and other denominations do not agree with feminism and their own values are not in line with feminists.

In a modern society relations between various nationalities and between religious denominations must be based on mutual respect and equality and idea that one political movement can be superior to another gives root to perspective hatred between various opinions.

So... what the fork now? I'm at a loss. The constitution is all for equality... but it's totes cool for religious organisations to disregard any notion of equality? And if anyone challenges that it's... a hate crime?

And Kasparov was bundled into a police van this afternoon. What the fork.

Sorry, I can't even construct proper sentences or any kind of... anythings... just now. I am in a spin.

i . . . i have no idea what that says. because political institutions and religious institutions must operate together within a nation, anything that contradicts the prevailing religious viewpoint should be viewed as illegal, even when the nation's constitution says it isn't? that's cooperation in a modern society? oh, russia.

i was shocked when i heard this morning. Thus far it was only something just below the radar for me, enjoying the kitten Riot newsreader mashup on waitwaitdonttellme. This is horrible.

Putin, seriously, could he seem any more mad-dictator now? I'm afraid to see what the NEXT step is.

Also, Gary Kasparov? what the fizzle?

In that the US is not that different in sentencing activists to lots of jail time for things that go against the supposed status quo. And indeed we aren't.
I don't find the sentence surprising and I am wondering if there is anything that can actually be done in support of them or in support of things that happen in the US to people. Isn't that the question that has been asked by activists for years? What do you do when your government is perpetrating some terrible things and you are powerless to stop them?

You know what we need? A massive forking "booooooo". I'm not kidding. Like this:

Quote:
The Berlin Wall. It was like hearing someone had dismantled Everest or filled in the Pacific Ocean. Revolution swept through the region, until a huge crowd assembled in Bucharest, where they'd been ordered to cheer Ceausescu. As he waved to the crowd a section booed. On the television, you could see Ceausescu's shocked face. Within seconds the whole crowd was booing and the revolution was underway. The unanswerable question is 'Who started the booing?' Someone must have been whispering to a friend, 'I'm thinking of booing. If I start, will you join in?' Maybe the whole crowd was alive with mutterings of 'you first'. But the underlying animosity towards the dictators, combined with the sense that as governments fell around them, anything was possible, meant that one boo was enough to spark a revolution.
©Mark Steel 1997.

Who's for the first 'boo'?

The sentence is disappointing, but I can't say I'm all that surprised. I guess Putin cares more about stamping out dissent and freedom of expression than what the rest of the world thinks of Russia. The U.S. state department has criticized the verdict, along with German chancellor Angela Merkel. I haven't seen a statement from President Obama though, just the White House spokesperson.

I still hope the whole thing is some kind of publicty stunt for Putin, just to jump in, pardon them and appear as some kind of benevolent hero/dictator... (never thought I would say someting like that).

The Russian Orthodox church "forgives" them, which would be oh-so-magnanimous (hey, aren't churches supposed to be all about forgiveness?) if they didn't also think that prosecuting them was appropriate.

How do people feel about protests about this? Someone asked me if a protest was being staged in Nottingham and it's becoming a niggly idea.
