Hi everyone!
I know there's a similar thread to this already, but I'm working on a list of vegan (accidental or not) items you can find in all the main supermarkets for my blog. I'm mainly making it for poor students (like me) who can't afford to but redwoods foods and such. Although I'd love to, if I could afford it. If you have any suggestions at all, I'd be really grateful if you could let me know!

what types of food are you looking for? ready-made meals? kitchen staples? snacks? i could rattle off a list of biscuits but i have a feeling that's not what you're after.

All of those are pretty much exactly what I'm after. Biscuits, ready meals, snacks, sweets, condiments, smoothies..... Anything that isn't absolutely obvious, like vegetables or grains. Also, the more biscuits the better. I like biscuits :D x

I think the Aldi Rice Krispies are too but I didn't look properly or buy them in the end.

Regular hobnobs
Lemon puffs
Most bourbons (I'd check first though to be sure)
Morrisons double chocolate cookies

other stuff...
Raspberry ruffles
Sainsburys basics pot noodles (I think all of them)
Sainsburys Love Soya frozen sausages and soya mince
Sainsburys basics instant potato (real smash now has dairy in, boo)
Banana Soreen (not the other varieties)
Sainsburys bacon crisps (like their own verson of frazzles)
Sainsburys do some cereals that are marked vegan, like their blueberry wheats (they also do cherry flavoured ones, raisin ones and apricot or something like that)

edit: ooh tesco has a whole refrigerated dairy free range that has cheese, cheesy spreads, puddings (albeit shiitake ones!), non dairy milks etc.

Is that the sort of things you're after?

I hardly ever go into sainsbury's, we only have the Sainsbury's Local shops in Liverpool and they're so small, they hardly ever have the more interesting things. Also, if anyone knows of any suitable Waitrose or Morrison's products that would be amazing. We don't have one here. Just Tesco's and Asda. Meh.

ooh some waitroses and sainsburys sell lazy days stuff in their free from aisles. There's vegan millionaires shortbread and chocolate ginger slices (which are superrad!) and choc orange slices. And tiffin. Pretty good.

Oh and choices caramels.

Oh how I wish asda, sainsburys and waitrose would make their way over here.

Asda has a new line of Indian convenience foods. The vegetable pakora, sag aloo, and sweet potato and red pepper dahnsak (sp?) looked vegan enough for me to buy them (nothing stood out as being non-vegan with a very thorough read through the ingredients). Tesco has a similar line, but I don't think much of it is vegan (definitely not the sag aloo, and neither line's daal is vegan!).

I'm probably being a bit dim here, but what on earth would one put in daal to make it not vegan?

Probably whey or milk powder, cos they put it in absolutely everything. :'(

I think it's just straight up milk, maybe cream. I can't remember specifically, but I do remember thinking, why are you putting that in daal?

Ghee, maybe?

I suppose I can see why it might have ghee, but the milk/whey powder thing always mystifies me, especially when if someone was cooking it at home they would never add it.

You get a few dhals that would authentically have cream or yoghurt in, dhal makhani does.

I didn't know that. I stand corrected!

Morrison do own-brand millionaire's shortbread in the FreeFrom section, but it's not great. The caramel layer is solid!

You know that most supermarkets will send you a vegan suitable list if you contact them?

They tend to be a bit inaccurate (e.g. double check the ingredients when you buy), but useful for spotting potentially accidentally vegan items if you've not shopped there previously.

The vegan society periodically publish a pocket sized book with listings, but it tends to get out of date very quickly. It's also contained some infamous misprints too, like Tesco jam donuts.

I am aware of both of those. I'm mainly making this as a starting out help. When I went vegan two years ago, I found it so frustrating that almost everything you can find online is US-exclusive. I just thought it might be helpful for people to have a list with a few items that are easily available, without having to slim through a list of every vegetable sainsbury's sells. But thanks :)

Waitrose vegetable sushi is vegan.

And indeed it is delicious.

Pink Panther Biscuits and the far superior, but harder to find, gluten-free Pink Panther Biscuits. The wafer ones. That came straight from heaven. Made of stardust and the memories of love's first kiss.

The GF ones are what I make my boyfriend buy when I'm ill and don't want to eat real food. I'm normally quite enthusiastic about sharing food (I've been accused of being a "feeder"), but they are a real "fork off, they are mine" food. I love them. I really do. I could honestly prattle on about how much I love them for hours. I love their texture, I love their taste, I love that they are have the Pink Panther on the pack. I even love that the GF ones are nicer than the wheat ones, and that they are slightly harder to find, because that somehow makes them even more secret and special.

Pink Panther biscuits are vegan and they are all mine.

I keep meaning to spread pink wafers with peanut butter and dip them in chocolate, but haven't got round to it yet. I suspect it might be a little bit of heaven.
