I've just discovered that tesco's free from cheddar-style cream cheese contains lactic acid! Not sure if this had been mentioned before, but I thought I'd post again to be sure since I, for one, assumed it would be vegan. Do ypu know if any of the other varieties contain it? The store I was in only had the cheddar one. I was really looking forward to trying it, so sad :(

the lactic acid in it is not from a dairy source; all of the range is clearly labelled "dairy free" and Tesco state it is all suitable for vegans. So, if you're happy to shop in Tesco, buy it and eat it I suppose!

Yeah, it's Sheese. I think it tastes like soiled nappies, but it is vegan.

I read on this forum at some point that all lactic acid is from non-dairy sources unless it's in dairy.

Ah I stand corrected! I'll still send them an email though, since the packet wasn't labelled "suitable for vegans" and all the other ones are :( and I've seen other products with lactic acid in them that specifically state it as from a non-dairy source, so I'll ask just to be sure!

My usual description of Sheese is "air-dry clay", but I can see the resemblance there as well.

I've just bought some of the Tesco fake cream cheese. It's better heated and stirred through vegetables as a sauce.

Blee. It doesn't make good cream cheese icing, unless you love your frosting to have the yeast smell of vegan-cheese-toe-jam-flavour
