I've googled it and haven't come up with an answer that's I'm willing to agree with. I'm not asking for doctor's advice but if anyone has every experienced before what did you do? I'm wondering if it's from my old fillings, which are over 40 years old but I've never had a problem with them or if it's a vitamin deficiency. The reason why I'm asking is that it's a very strong taste, so strong I have to keep mints or something in my mouth to mask the taste. It's really really strong. I'm also on generic Wellbutrin and birth control pills for peri-menopausal symptoms.
Thanks.

Have you eaten pine nuts recently?

someone asked that same question on another message board about the problem. No pine nuts but I have been eating hazelnuts lately. Think that might be it?

I was thinking of pine mouth. I don't think it happens with hazelnuts, though.

Are you taking any medications? I was on an antibiotic a few years ago that made my mouth taste like I was constantly chewing on aluminum foil. Ugh.

This happens to my mom as well. She is also on Welbutrin and birth control pills so maybe a correlation? This is completely unscientific guessing since she's on many other meds too. Hope yours gets resolved.

What are your iron levels? If they are high you can get a metallic taste.

can you tell if it's an iron taste or some other metal? (if it's iron, i wonder if you have a wound in your mouth somewhere.)

I'll call my gyno next week if this different toothpaste doesn't help or the bottle of zinc I just bought doesn't help either. And I'll ask her if there's any connection between this and the Wellbutrin and bc pills I'm taking. If not, I think I'll get some blood work done to check my iron. I had blood work in February. My hair is also thinning and I'm getting male pattern baldness, just enough that I'd notice it. Or it's just thinning in the front. That seems to be a symptom of a handful of medical problems. Minor, fixable problems. argh.
Thanks!
eta: No wounds or anything out of the ordinary. Just going through peri-menopause, which is about as fun as it sounds.

Just an update: I took a 50mg zinc pill a few hours ago and the taste is no longer strong. Kind of barely there. So maybe I need to remember to take my multi-vitamins.

I had that happen once...for about two weeks a mild metallic taste. I think I switched toothpaste and took some vitamins, but not sure what actually made it go away.
Yeah, and when you google that, there's about 50 different things it could be...ranging from harmless to deadly.
I'm glad it started to go away.

Ha ha.
Glad it's sorted out - the usual suspect is pine nuts - which, after having "pine mouth" twice, has left me terrified to eat them.

Glad it's gone! And I just wanted to say that I read the wikipedia article somebody linked about pine mouth (which I had already heard of and am terrified of) and learned so much more about pine nuts than I had known (which was almost nothing). So thanks!

butterbobbin wrote: And I had never heard of pine mouth... yup a year or two ago, there was actually a blurb about it in Cook's Illustrated magazine. I don't mean to call China out, but I do think it was pine nuts from China that were causing some people to have a metallic taste in their mouth for at least a couple of weeks, if not longer. I think the remedy was just to wait it out :(

I think it turned out that it was yes, a variety of chinese something or other that wasn't a "true" pine nut. There was a way to avoid them - I think they're slightly different shaped as well. I'll have a look around.
