This dude has a history of fake bs "evolutionary psychology" type "studies." He didn't actually have any evidence for this, the science points to the opposite conclusion: women who are having second children with a diff partner are less likely to have morning sickness than women who are having second children with the same partner, that is, the ones who should be desensitized are not. This is the same guy who brought you "PIV sex without protection cures depression." Will post link when I'm on a computer.

I hope you can find the links, because this study sounds like b.s and male wishful thinking. Did they compare the rate of morning sickness in pregnant women with male partners to those with no partner or a female partner?

The slate article makes me want to punch someone. As an aside, this is my problem with faky evolutionary science (I say faky bc I have an evolutionary biologist in the family who has made it clear that respectable science doesn't ever make claims like this). Morning sickness does not have to be either a positive adaptation OR a "side effect" of some other adaptation. It could easily be a random mutation that is associated with a beneficial mutation (associated meaning on the same chromosome so it gets passed down with the other). As long as it doesn't keep most women from reproducing healthy children and raising them, there is no reason it wouldn't be passed down. That is, even if it's unpleasant, it is a totally neutral mutation. It doesn't require much more explanation than that, frankly. The question should not be "why do humans do x, y, or z" but "is there any reason we WOULDN'T?"

LADIES, STOP COMPLAINING! YOU SHOULD BE THANKFUL FOR ANY EXCUSE TO HAVE MORE SEMEN IN YOU!

Addendum to my last post: morning sickness may even be a negative mutation, but as long as it's not THAT negative (which it's not for the vast majority of women - they go on to have perfectly healthy children and are healthy enough themselves to raise them), if it's connected with a beneficial enough mutation, it again has no reason of not being passed down. There are even negative mutations which get passed down not because of association with positive mutations, but just because of genetic drift. It is a fallacy to say that because it exists in a species today, it is a beneficial adaptation. That is just not how evolution works.

And also, Gallup is strictly an "evolutionary psychology" dude these days, which means the likelihood is that everything he says should be taken as "making excuses for the patriarchy."

Looked it up myself and based on the methodology I'm unconvinced that regular old relationship stress is not a factor here and that doesn't seem to have been controlled for at all. There seems to be as much evidence that a longer relationship with the father and an easier time getting pregnant (using donor sperm increases risk) reduces risk as "seminal priming" does. The methodology here is actually about as unconvincing as Gallup's stuff - asking people to recall experiences and accurately report them in interviews and on questionnaires does not make for Grade A science, it makes for a good stepping stone to know if it's reasonable to do some Grade A science on a particular issue.

You don't have to do it DURING (which frankly, I wouldn't want anyway), just sometime around. So when the dude wakes his preggers lady up at 3 in the morning and offers his parts, that is a kindness and should be viewed and accepted as such.
