Getting ready for a horror film festival, so lots of horror on Netflix.
Night of the Scarecrow - meh. Troll 2 - hilarious. The Keep - dig the Tangerine Dream soundtrack. Story is OK. Day of the Dead (2005) - Romero does it better. Child's Play - was much better when I was 10. Pet Sematary -I dig! Predictable, but I liked it. Shutter - So good! Asian horror is so much creepier than western horror for some reason. Amityville 2 - It's OK. Psycho (remake) - meh. The Exorcist 2 - Awful. Wish I could unsee.
I swear I have a social life and a job, too!

watched You Don't Mess with the Zohan last night. I was highly amused by all the hummus references in it.

Ravenous - That was silly. And Robert Carlyle, with his wee beady eyes, looked pretty creepy. I don't even think it was make-up - he just looked creepy.

44 Inch Chest - The only thing worse than this movie is the fact that there actually are men who still think it's acceptable to beat their wives for daring to leave them, and to kidnap and threaten to murder the men they're leaving them for. Or, in the case of the friends, to encourage another man to do such things.
There were actually some really good actors* in this, but the subject was just awful. If you find misogyny and domestic violence triggering, you'll want to stay away from this.
*The guy who plays Stannis Baratheon is actually pretty hot when he's not Stannis Baratheon.

I watched My Life to Live, a 1962 French film this afternoon (subtitled) on TCM that was quite good. The only odd thing about it (to me) is that there were two scenes of open gunfire on the Paris streets in two unrelated incidents which seemed a little implausible, maybe. Quite a good movie though. I wish US/Hollywood movies would consider conceptualizing films more uniquely as this one was done rather than never straying from the traditional straight up chronological narrative. It's like someone really thought about this before committing it all to film, all the symbolism tying in, etc. Stuff that makes you think, good dialogue, situations and characters you come to care about. Not sentimental at all though. It was good! Really good! I just talked myself into it's goodness.

The Full Monty - I find it hard to sympathise with homophobic misogynists (within the first 5-10 minutes, they'd referred to some guys as poofs more than once, openly judged/graded women walking by, and encouraged domestic violence), so I had difficulty getting on the side of the protagonists. I kinda warmed up to them by the end, but my overall impression was meh.

Secretary, which I found interesting but not as much as I expected it to be. Either the version was censored, or the editing was really crappy becuase there was a lot missing to the story in my opinion.

Here's my Letterboxd account, if anyone else is on that site. I haven't seen any particularly good movies the past few weeks, though. This must change!

The Grey. I really liked it even if the film's main character is a guy who kills animals for a living. I just love the survival/wilderness movies. Plus, Liam Neeson is just the best.

Hanna Howl's Moving Castle I'm a Cyborg, but That's OK My Sassy Girl Attack the Block
Hanna was very good. Attack the Block was excellent. All the others are on my list of favorites. All together I give them a total of 23 stars, fourteen crescent moons, seven or eight thumbs up, a top hat, and nine cookies.

Seven Psychopaths - really ridiculously insane and fun and funny. Oh my god. I think college kids are going to go nuts for it.
Hello I Must Be Going - loved it. Just a small, sad yet pleasant movie about a youngish, lostish divorcee. Also I'm in love with Christopher Abbott now.

^ Not the first you heard of it, my post about it was first! :P
Saw The Master. I don't know if it was good or not because my mom and her friends didn't shut up the whole time. Great acting though.

I saw 'Frances Ha' at the NY Film Festival Thursday night! It's a black and white, quirky hipster little independent movie about a woman stuck between youth and growing up/moving on as an individual and it was SO GOOD. so freaking good. It's written by Noah Baumbach (who directed) and Greta Gerwig (who stars) and I met both after! And Grace Gummer too.
