I need to google before I ask silly questions.

If that's how she's going to be as the companion, I'm excited. I doubt she'll replace Amy and Rory for me, but there's definitely potential and I can see her and Matt Smith playing off each other very well.

Although, I do have a number of questions.

I'm going to agree with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uz2i8ZgH ... ture=g-u-u instead.

It's a bit bad to have her define herself with the whole kid thing after all that

and they have a kid named river.

But they didn't really have River. Yes, she is their child, but their context of her is strictly as an adult.

she grew up with river as mels. When she was a child she knew child river.

and that still ignored the point she is some kind of supermodel she's saved the world a couple dozen times he waited 2k years for himself but the second she can't have babies she defines herself with less value and leaves him. Thanks for the role to show children.

So that was Jenna-Louise Colman as souffle girl, right? So how do you think she will be the new companion come christmas? Playing a totally different character? Or some timey-wimey explanation?

I'm wondering how this is going to go as well, because the new companion wasn't suppose to be introduced until the Christmas Special, so that makes it seem like she's going to be playing another character as the companion. And the new companion's name was suppose to be Cara, not Orwin (though that is a really awesome name). That just seems odd to me though, because even though Karen played another character before she became the companion, it was a couple series before and a pretty minor character. It's Doctor Who though, so pretty much anything could happen to be used to explain how Orwin becomes Cara(or whatever the companion's name ends up being).

But again... that is a different context. In that she was their friend Mels. She didn't know child River, she knew child Mels. The personalities between regenerations are totally different.

Perhaps defining herself through a child (right or wrong) was a grasp at normalcy. To move on past the drama of life with the Doctor.

But now I'm remembering that both Freema and Karen were on the show as different characters before they became companions.

Yes, and Colin Baker was on the show before he became the doctor. But in those situations the actor worked as a guest star and then just happened to get hired for a bigger part some time later. (And then their earlier roles were either ignored or weakly explained away (Martha just happened to have an identical cousin!)) We already knew Jenna was going to be the new companion, so their must be some bigger plan at play here.

Just got done watching the new episode and I didn't really like it. I think it would have been a million times better had Amy and Rory not been in it. I am so sick of this being the "Amy Gets Herself Into Trouble and Needs All The Men To Save Her" show. This damsel in distress bullshiitake is more than getting old. Amy becomes a dalek and needs "her boys" to save her, Amy gets some Weeping Angel crud in her eye and needs the guys to save her, Amy gets stuck in a room on her own and needs the guys to save her, Amy gets stolen by some crazy chick with an eye patch and needs the guys to save her, and so on and so on and so on.

Yes! So many holes in that story.
I had also thought that Orwin was the new companion, but I guess maybe not? Or, "timey-wimey" or whatever.... Hmmm. I was underwhelmed, but I'm hoping it gets better from hereon in.

That review has to be one of the most obnoxious things I've read in quite some time. But then perhaps I'm just one of those people who apparently enjoy "shiitake That Looks Cool If You Have A Limited Attention Span And Don’t Stop To Think About It." Or, well, kids' shows with loads of running down corridors and explosions and snappy dialogue and such. I do wonder how the original series would have fared had the Internet existed to rip it to shreds every week. Perhaps 'Disgruntled of Ashby-de-la-Zouche' just wrote snippy screeds to Points of View every Sunday instead.

Re: the Amy/Rory children thing, I think there's a big difference between defining yourself via your ability to procreate and identifying and accepting that your partner wants something major that you don't (and in this case can't provide). Was this conveyed well? No, but they had about 30 seconds to transmit the point in the midst of the rest of the episode. Probably they should have just left it out but people forking love Amy and Rory and their drama, so I understand putting it in.

Personally, I thought this was a fun episode, with good pacing and less confusing bs than we've seen in a while. changing the rules/mangling the continuity for the sake of exploring a new direction... That is not at all new or unusual for Doctor Who.

The episode did not need the Amy and Rory drama. It was wholly useless and thrown in for no reason at all. At all. Episode- ok. I'm bored of Steven moffat taking epic baddies and making them dull. Like the cybermen last season.

I love Matt smith. And Coleman will be awesome. But jeez. Get rid of Amy already.

Waaah so disappointed with this ep :(

- Amy and Rory drama totally unnecessary. Tacky kiss and make up at the end.
- Amy has IMHO always been so disrespectful to Rory. He's too gorgeous for that.
- GO AWAY KAREN GILLAN'S ACTING. Did I just say that? Sorry. Just that I can't seem to count more than two expressions on her face (smug and pouty). And the crying bits I don't call crying. KG fans will hate me but that beautiful van Gogh episode held sooo much potential for her to really get some emotion across. Even more I think than the Doctor getting killed episode. RTD (I think) said, about the Doctor's death, how KG was "acting her heart out". And maybe it is just me but mannnnn I don't get ANYTHING emotional from her. Not like Rose in Father's Day and the ep where she tells Jackie that she went back and saw her dad.
- agree with the damsel in distress needs to be saved by dashing man angle. Yuck.
- didn't like souffle girl one bit. Too much like Amy Pond, with smug-pout. Then again I think Donna Noble was the best companion because there was no flirty crepe. Actually, when I heard CT was going to play Donna I was all NO WAY. Then she ended up being my favourite.
- CRINGE at yet another powerful enemy being vanquished so easily.

Matt Smith is totally gorgeous and I'd do him, but Christopher Eccleston's performances with Daleks is the best evahhh. Love CE. Love love love him. And Donna Noble.

Amy and Rory are a bit played out for me. I'm ready for something new. Since I try not to read the spoiler-y stories, I knew a new companion was coming, but I didn't know that wasn't until Christmas, so boy was I disappointed. I liked Amy in the beginning, but like her less and less. I think folks here hit on exactly what I don't like, but could not articulate: Rose Tyler - looked into the time vortex, survived, saved the universe, then made an impossible trip between universes with a giant forking gun to help save all of reality. Martha Jones - kicks asparagus from day one helping to save the hospital. Then she travels the world alone, under dangerous conditions, to orchestrate a plan to defeat the master. Donna Noble - Is fairly independent; a sassy moral compass. She figures stuff out a lot, then becomes doctordonna for the win.

Meanwhile, Amy spends a lot of time waiting for men and getting saved by men. I know typically the Dr saves the day, but with Amy it is getting to be a bit much.
That said I LOVED the idea of hacking the dalek's collective consciousness to make them forget the doctor. I'm sorry, that's brilliant.

I wish the next companion were the dude with the baby. Why always a sexy woman? I liked the Ponds for there being two of them; it broke the sexy girl sidekick dynamic. For all Amy's damsel-in-distress, she has a real love who isn't the doctor. I do not like souffle girl. Too sex kitten pouty I'm a genious but still adorable and non-threatening (and bi-curious, how hawt)
But I liked this episode*, and will miss the Ponds. But really, how great would it be to have a pudgy guy companion?

*was bothered by children thing, too, but not enough to spoil

Yep, guy companion this time would be awesome. Or basically anyone that is not pretty-young-girl-making-gaga-eyes-at-the-doctor. That's why I loved Donna Noble so much, because she was not in love with him.

I vote for Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard) to be the new companion!

But, uh, the last couple of male companions were either evil or died very young.

I'm assuming you're not counting Mickey or Captain Jack (I don't either).

Ha, yeah, I was thinking Turlough and Adric. Captain Jack isn't really a companion, per se, and Rickey (SORRY, I mean MICKEY) was sort of a hanger-on.

This is all sort of ignoring the original point of the Doctor's companions in the 60's, which was to give male adult viewers of the show a character to check out while their children watched the sci-fi.

And yeah, this show could really use a sexy male companion and romantic/sexual tension between the Doctor and him.
