Did anyone notice that they showed the Walt Whitman book in the opening scene of the episode? When Walt reaches out from the shower to get his towel he over or in front of the book. You can't read the title or anything (though I paused it to try), but I was pretty sure it would figure again in the story.
If I knew my Whitman better (okay, if I knew Whitman at all...) I would have understood the significance of the title (Gliding Over All) better, which is a Walt Whitman poem.
I think this episode was the 2012 finale and the final eight episodes in 2013.

Yeah, they're splitting the final season into two shorter seasons, so there were eight episodes this summer and there will be eight more next summer.

Well yeah I mean, it's pretty much just two short seasons, but they're calling it one. I guess since it's 16 episodes total. I don't really know the reasoning behind it, other than to cause us undue agony.

This. If it's approximately a full year between the start of the "first half" and the "second half" of the season, then it's two seasons. AMC does not get a free pass to redefine the way TV works just because their shows are badass. They can say "mini-seasons" if they wish, but who the hell do they think they're fooling? And now I feel like I should grab a pitchfork. I"m really not that passionate about it. Okay, maybe I am.

It's probably because they filmed it all at once, so for the people on the show, it was one season. (Did they film it all already? I'm just guessing)

i wonder if it's for people who buy the season pass on itunes. (at least i hope we don't have to buy another season pass for 5.5)
or maybe it's because the writers said specifically a long time ago that it'd only be 5 seasons. this way there's no backtracking.

I doubt it has anything to do with the writers or Vince Gilligan. It's probably just a strategic move on AMC's part - keeping their most successful show on the air for one more year, milking it for one more Emmy season and all that.

(but i was saying that might be the reason they're calling next summer season 5 instead of season 6. AMC would probably have called it season 6.)

But the two mini seasons are still just going to equal 16 episodes total - the same amount of episodes in one regular season. So the writers aren't getting any extra episodes out of it. That's why it seems like a network move. By "splitting it up" AMC is still only getting seasons' worth of episodes out of Vince Gilligan, but they get to keep BB on the air for an extra year. All I know for sure is: UGH.

well on the behind the scenes thing for episode 8, he did say that the writers were busy writing the last episodes. (but that might have just been a side effect of being offered the extra year)

I accidentally bought the HD version this season and was so confused about why it was still only $13 or so. Then I heard about this split season crepe and now I understand.

We started watching it again from the beginning on Netflix and are already into season 2 in three days. I didn't realize how crazy and good it was right from the very beginning.

Just watched the finale again with the husband and I got all jittery and nervous toward the end because I KNEW what was coming and it freaked me out all over again.

Okay, not going to read this thread yet, because I still have 4 or 5 more episodes to go to catch up. Just wanted to say that I live in ABQ, so my husband and I have done a couple driving tours (while trying to get the baby to sleep) finding different places in the show. We drove by the car wash, Walt's apartment, Wendy's motel, and Denny's where they meet. Still haven't found Jesse's place or Hank and Marie's place. Also, I was watching an episode yesterday and lo and behold, someone I know was on the show! I wasn't expecting that. He was a salesman.

Turns out we only had 2 episodes to go and now are done! I'm so glad Hank is on to him but I do think maybe Walt did that on purpose. Also, they didn't show the results of his CT scan. Looking forward to next year.

well, he definitely has another year (remember the opening scene of season 5? he was living in new hampshire? i suppose if he has a new identity, it could be less than a year though)

I remembered the opening scene with the new identity, but not the birthday thing. If he has a new identity he probably does have a different birthday.
