No, really! I tried as a CogSci wannabe at Berkeley and failed because the environment was ...terrible. (I mean, really, who thought putting upper division Cognitive Science majors with brand new CS/Engineering majors would be a good idea?) But now I'm doing a MatLab course with one of my classmates and it's full of win! We finish early and creatively, and yesterday had extra time to analyze our own data (also full of win!).

I'm sure it's a combination of the very friendly "let's discover and break stuff" environment, the fact that we're 10 students (6 ladies, 4 dudes) and have 3 post-doc instructors walking around the room encouraging us on the problem sets, and that it's me and my friend (two brains: still better than one).

I was expecting a week of terror, but instead it's fun and I (gasp!) can't wait for another 8 hours of it today.

High five, just-learned-to-program-buddy :D I'm taking a class this semester where, so far, we've learned bash, perl, mySQL, R, and html, which sounds terrifying but has actually been super interesting and rewarding and I can see a billion ways where this information will help me in my research!! Learning useful new stuff is awesome!

Edited for spelling..

Cool. MatLab was actually OK for me. The only other programming I've done is C and that makes me swear like a bargee (at least that's what my dictionary thinks the English expression for it is). I could do it, but it sure wasn't enjoyable.

Good for you. That really sounds like an ideal learning environment. Keep enjoying and learning!

Congrats! I remembered when I first learned to program, I was in love. Perl still makes me quiver... I don't do it very often these days though.
