Also I think the bill is up to $4,000 to 5,000 now, and it increases every hour basically! Yikes! Of course I will spend every penny of my savings on my dog if it has any chance of helping her.

more good thoughts coming for Sable! i'm glad she's stablized now, raspberrycomplaint.
i'm with you on spending all that you can to help her. our dog julie was diagnosed with thyroid cancer last november. surgery, chemotherapy treatments and multiple oncology visits really added up. she's in remission and our savings account is non-existant, but it was sooooo worth it to help her out.
i hope they figure out what's going on with Sable and that she gets to come home super soon!

Vet bills can be so expensive! Some people thought it was insane that I went into over $6k of credit card debt for Effie, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Yesterday, the hospital called us twice to update the bill and it scared the shiitake out of me each time because the do not have a separate phone # for the billing department. It's the same number as the clinic, so when I saw it on the caller ID, I assumed the worst. My mom called them back and said, "You know, you keep freaking us out. We have a dog in critical condition, and when we see the number for the hospital, we think something bad has happened." So just now they called and left a message on the machine, and it said "This is not a medical call. We are calling to update your bill. Again, this is not a medical call." They probably think we're difficult clients for complaining, but really.
I am going to visit Sable soon. I really hope there isn't any bad news! I feel like good news is too much to hope for, so I'll settle for no bad news.

Yeah, I would pay anything for my dog! I know you guys understand. I'm sure a lot of people would think it's crazy though. But I don't care, I would go into debt for her.

Haven't been to visit yet, but this is the latest update:
The test for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever came back positive. The treatment for that is the same for the anaplasma, so they're just going to continue on with the doxycycline. Red blood cell count still at 30. It hasn't dropped but it hasn't gone up either. I don't know what normal is, but I think they want it to be higher. She ate a little, but then vomited it all back up, so they are not pleased with that. But they said she seems perkier. Still waiting on some blood results. I'm leaving soon to visit her, so I'll let you all know how she is.

doxy has a great success rate with this kind of illness, so i'm really happy to hear that that might be the whole problem!
raspberrycomplaint, are you eligible for care credit? it's specifically for medical expenses, including veterinary, and i believe tufts accepts it. it made a world of difference for me when my cat had to spend time at the emergency hospital here. they'll defer 100% of the interest for anywhere from six months to a year, which makes the payments much more manageable.

Hey, sweetheart, don't let anyone else set your priorities for you. It's obvious how much she means to you.

I went to see her. They had said she was perkier, but she seemed really tired. Her heart rate was climbing so they drew more bloods when we were there because that could mean anemia. They just called and needed permission to do another transfusion. Her blood count had dropped to 16 which is really low. It's especially upsetting because she seemed to be getting better a tiny bit and now this. Still waiting on some test results. The vet thinks that because she has been on antibiotics for 48 hours and hasn't shown any big improvement that there might be something more than the tick diseases at work. She is waiting on tests to see if Sable has something called ITP.
I was hopeful for a little while that she was getting better. Now I'm scared again.

ITP is trickier to treat, but it can be managed. i've seen dogs do well.

I'm just so scared that she isn't strong enough. She is so sick. And we just lost a dog at the shelter to IMHA which I think is similar to ITP. I did read a little about ITP and it says it can be caused by tick-borne diseases sometimes, so it does all make sense. I hate that the diagnoses keep piling up.
And I'm afraid of running out of money too. I don't think I can get care credit because I have zero credit. Which I think is stupid. I've never been in debt, but because I haven't ever put myself in debt with a loan or credit card my credit rating is zilch and no one will loan me money. I have tried to get a credit card to build some credit, but they all rejected me because I had zero credit. So how the fork am I supposed to get any?
When Sable had the original transfusion, the vet said it could take up to 10 transfusions to stabilize her. So it is not entirely unexpected, but I was so hoping that one would be enough.

Sending you and Sable lots of love and good thoughts. It is terrible to deal with financial burdens as well as having to worry about your baby...I've been there. It will work out though. <3
