My friends ordered the vegan extravaganza pizza from Hot Lips on Hawthorne and it arrived with bacon on it. Not funny and not a mistake.

I have some friends who live up there and I'm sure they would like to hear about this--can you tell us more about what happened?

Yes. My friends ordered a takeout vegan extravaganza pizza. As they were eating it, they noticed a number of carefully placed, concealed pieces of bacon. There is no way it was a mistake. Someone or more than one in the kitchen thought it would be funny.
They did call to complain. A new pizza was sent out. They won't be ordering from them again, I won't, and I am hoping no one who reads this will either!

I wouldn't just call. I would write a letter to the owner.

I never cared for Hot Lips pizza. I'd rather give my money to Sizzle Pie, Pyro, or Portobello. Rudy's is pretty good, too.

this is pretty awful slander. how do we know it was purposeful? there is no proof of this at all. they have long offered vegan options and i think it goes too far to accuse them of purposefully putting bacon on a vegan pizza, no matter where/how it was placed. it could have been an accident, or a pizza intended for someone else. we don't have enough information. in all places with vegan and non-vegan items, things sometimes get mixed up. it's not cool to trash businesses based on speculation.

I am passing along my friends' information. Based on the number of pieces of bacon and how it was placed on the pizza, they feel sure it was intentional. It wasn't a full order of bacon, and they don't think it was a pizza intended for someone else. Everyone is welcome to make their own choice about what to do with the information, of course.

If it was intentional, this is probably a reflection on a shitty employee rather than Hot Lips as a whole.

If someone went out of their way to hide pieces of bacon on an otherwise vegan pizza, that doesn't seem like an accident. Would they do the same to a person who doesn't eat pork for religious reasons?

Would they do the same to a person who doesn't eat pork for religious reasons? But there's really no way to tell that someone tried to hide bacon on a pizza is there? You can speculate but they don't know that's what happened. An employee may indeed be a jerk but there's no proof without a confession and I can't see anyone fessin' up to that. And I'd imagine that anyone who thought it was funny to put some pork product on a vegan pizza would also think it was funny to put some on a Kosher pizza. Some people don't have a good grasp on sense of humour.

I'm dismayed to hear about this, my sincere apologies.
As the owner of HOTLIPS I would in no way approve. Please give me a chance to look into the details. I'd be surprised if this was intentional, but again there could be a inconsiderate boob on staff.
BTW Thank you Ingrid and Molasses Jane I appreciate you're comments.

Posting about this here instead of taking it up with the restaurant reflects incredibly poorly on vegans, in my opinion. And as the owner of this message board, I apologize to Hot Lips, and thank them for handling this in such a professional manner.

A guest brought 2 huge vegan Hot Lips pizzas to my friend's 70th Birthday party potluck (all vegan, although he has a diverse group of friends.) Everyone who got a slice raved about how good they were. Hot Lips has always been a generous community supporter - we're glad you're here! I love your blackberry soda too.

They did take it up with the restaurant, and they didn't ask me to post about it. I woke up feeling mad and protective on their behalf on Saturday and posted. I guess I did something shitty. This was not my intention. My intention was protective on my friends' behalf. I guess I wasn't thinking about the business or giving them the benefit of the doubt, and I really appreciate that the owner has posted. I messed up. It's not my story and I shouldn't have broadcasted it.

Hi Celyn, Not sure how to take this private on this forum and don't want to put my e-mail out there for fear of spam but if you like contact me through a message here http://hotlipspizza.com/contact/ And thank you everybody for your support and please don't fear our vegan pies (several of the pizza cooks and supervisors at Hawthorne HOTLIPS are Vegans)

I love how the owner handled it too. Unfortunately I live in a land far, far away.
But, ya know, if I am ever over that way I will drop by.
