That really can't be economically feasible, can it? I imagine the shellfish has got to be more expensive than the actual fruit. And if they use non-organic shellfish can they still put the organic label on bananas?

'hard-line vegans'. Really? You're spraying FRUIT with dead animal bits and they're the only ones who are going to be worried?

Vegan aside, I know too many people with anaphylactic shellfish allergies. That's a very bad idea.

What the motherfuck! This is stupid. Do we really need bananas that will keep for that long? Hopefully organic nanners will still be safe.

I recently discovered that a lot of fruit is not technically vegan. A lot of fruit that's waxed - so basically all citrus, and things like apples and pears - is actually coated in shellac. I had always assumed that a plant-based wax was used, but was really bummed to find out this wasn't the case. Sometimes it feels like there's no escaping animal products. :(

I read about this a few weeks back. Since shellfish is a big time allergen I think the idea is stupid, and the produce lady at the store agrees!

I'm allergic to shellfish and I love bananas. This can't happen.

yeah, it makes no sense to use a spray based on shellfish when it's one of the most common allergens. I think many non-vegans would be grossed out by this too. Just because someone uses animal products doesn't mean they want shellfish in their bananas.

This seems like an awful idea all around. OK, so excluding those crazy vegans and crazy people with shellfish allergies, what about people who keep kosher? So basically this would be a huge issue for multiple groups of people.

Animal products aside, this is just dangerous. I know people that are DEATHLY allergic to shellfish.

And ew of course. Just put your damn bananas in the fridge if you want them to keep. I am guilty of letting bananas go bad all the time. I just make banana bread. I dont want anything put on them to make them keep ('natural' or not)

I need a raise so I can start buying organic bananas. They are one of the few I buy non-organic still. Maybe I should present this article during my review next month.

Thankfully this won't be happening too soon.

I had bananas going bad so I forced myself to eat one every day for like two months and I finally started to like them. I don't crave them or anything but now I don't have them go bad. Plus, if you cut them up and freeze them you can put them into smoothies or just eat blended, frozen banana which is like the best.

Aside from the aforementioned problems, this will also suck for those of us who make banana bread often. I'll now have to be sure to buy bananas at least three weeks in advance to make sure they're ripe in time.

If I buy too many bananas, I peel and freeze what I won't be able to eat before they get over ripe or spoil. Frozen bananas are great in smoothies.

Yeah, this has always been a bummer. There's only so much you can do! Even organics are covered in it.

I know, right?! I like eating barely ripe bananas, but the whole reason I buy them is so they can get ripe really fast, so I can use them in smoothies and bread. I have a rotation system!
