I could argue with the tone of the article - I did not care for it. However it did bring more insight into the religion...

I rather liked the article. It brought up many issues you don't really think about. I feel like people romanticise their way of life too much perhaps. Someone upthreads said they liked that they spoke German amongst themselves. It barely sounded anything like modern day German. I couldn't really understand them without the subtitles.

From what I understand their language (Pennsylvania German) is based on a 17th/18th century Southern German dialect.

I've seen some Amish documentaries on German TV and I could understand them fine. But German is my mother tongue and I am used to the modern version of that dialect. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palatinate_German

I understand German very well, just not their version, but it isn't my native language either. It must be kind of like Afrikaans which I understand because it's more 17th century Dutch and my native language.

I meant to say it is my first language. Yes, it's a very similar development. I think it is very fascinating how people emigrated from Germany (or other countries), took their dialect with them and preserved a big part of it.

Where I grew up (Europe) there are Roma and Sinti gypsy sections in every town, great and small. Our elementary school tried to get the gypsy kids to come to school but wasn't very successful, they only so often showed up. Their trailers were all decked out with those figurines they show in the video above. "If I didn't clean all the time I would feel empty".

I find this far more amusing than I should. It's even more scandalous than the people in the NC farmer's markets with a truck full of imported produce. It got so prevalent that they started requiring signs stating where everything came from. Granted, that has nothing to do with being Amish.

There should be a cleaning service called Gypsy Maids!

just wanted to add that Strawberryrock is correct, of course... most of the "regular" Mennonites just wear regular clothes, so you cant tell it's "them", or rather "us" as I am a Mennonite. But yeah, in the US the old order Mennonites do wear head coverings and rather plain dresses (not as plain as the Amish though, and I think they are allowed to use zippers). I couldnt understand the Pennsylvanian Dutch besides some words, but my mom, who used to live in South Germany in her youth, understood it just fine.

Ep. 2 was OK, I think the producers are hoping for bigger reactions to a lot of the things shown. Also I guess I was naive thinking the Amish would be nicer (not so gossipy), I see a lot of catty behavior going on....

I felt like I was watching the Real World. There were a few times where I thought they weren't even Amish, that they are just actors. They are indeed catty. I guess regular peeps have more in common with Amish than we think. I do wonder why that one girl has no teeth. Do Amish brush their teeth? Prob a dumb question but who knows. She may have had really bad teeth and never went to the dentist. Poor thing.

I thought that it was due to no dentist, which sucks.

The Amish are secretly hooked on Jersey Shore...or at least their English clothing picks reflect that!

According to Facebook (source of all knowledge!), Breaking Amish is totally contrived. I know, I know, tell us something we didn't know. Apparently, one of the kids is a thirty year old divorced father of three who hasn't lived within the Amish community in years.

NOOOOOOOO!!!!! DO NOT RUIN MY FAVE SHOW!!!!! Seriously these stories are crazy...But the news kinda sheds light on behavior for me.

Ugh, not that I'm defending the reality of the show, but that article was So. Badly. Written. If you're going to posit that an alleged photo of a truck, deleted from someone's (whose?) myspace is "further proof" of something, how about including it? Or including any photos at all to back up the claims of your source? All she has is the word of this woman. And poor grammar.

Yeah, this show has already been busted for being fake as all get-out. The producers are saying the cast is the one who deceived them by pretending to still be Amish, but a lot of stuff hasn't added up for me. Like, Abe's whole family had no problem being filmed? His mom went to NYC in a car? A 30 year old who still wasn't married and went right out and got a tattoo and knows how to fist bump? Oooooookay.

Another thing that struck me as odd is that all of these kids (really adults) know lots of stuff about the modern world, but Abe didn't know what the microwave was. Some of the cartoonish statements like that clash with the fact that they know about things like sushi.

Yes, and how they kept saying 'wow he/she is so hottttt'...I did not think the Amish would be so Paris Hilton 2001 - like...

I thought that Abe's mom was a cam hors d'oeuvre :P - seriously it was odd, going to a cafe with your Amish mom...I was thinking maybe the Amish are not so strict as we thought but then again...

Ohh and how did those girls get into a modeling agency so fast? How did they figure all of this out?

When Jeremiah got the tattoo he said he got 3 names to go with it. I wondered why he did not say the names. When I read he has 3 kids I figured those were the names...I guess I was right. Supposedly that was not his first tattoo and TLC paid for him to get his ex-wife's name lazered off!

I don't care if the show is fake/how fake it is, it is still super sad at 19 that girl had all her teeth pulled. When she took out her dentures and made what she called her 'grandma face' my heart broke.

This is what my husband said, it felt like the Real World.
