I don't know if you can do it wrong as long as it goes up one nostril and out the other? I think there's just a bunch of nooks and crannies in the sinus (YES, my impression of the nasal cavity does resemble an English muffin) for the water to get stuck in. Or at least that's what I usually tell myself when I look like a total weirdo trying to angle my head in all different directions to get the last of the water out!

If I recall correctly, the instructions that came with mine (I have a NeilMed one) said to use it at least 15 minutes before you were going to leave the house or whatnot, as it could take that long for some of the water to come out.

Like the memorable day I was leaning over to check some drilling fluid in the lab - luckily no one noticed and it didn't seem to affect the viscosity :-) I bought one for my 11-y.o. yesterday. I hope it helps him with his nasal difficulties.

I got one yesterday and tried it last night. It wasn't that bad, except it made my eyes water quite a bit. Also, on the second side, the solution went mostly in my mouth and it made me gag a little. But otherwise i didn't really notice much difference as far as my congestion or breathing or "clean" feeling.
Does it help to use it more often to notice a difference?

Also leave at least 1/2 and hour before lying down or it can run into your sinus cavities and cause infection. Forcing it through too hard can push it into the sinus cavities and cause infection too. I bent over earlier and my nose just flooded! It was hours after sinus rinsing so not related, it must have been the cold air outside. Unfortunately I was talking to two other dog walkers at the time and had to turn away to hoak for a tissue in my bag. I couldn't find one and had to scurry away quickly and probably came off as a rude bisque!

I have a really hard time breathing through my mouth while I use it, and I usually end up feeling like I just drowned and then I cough a lot and it's just plain awful.

Edited because name and night are not the same word. Not even close.

Mine says to use at least one hour before bed for this reason (I guess NeilMed doesn't care if you go out and have water going down your face). haha!

What is everyone's flow situation like? When I use it, it takes a few seconds to start coming out and after that it drips out. It never flows in a stream like all of the videos show. I also have to blow my nose afterward to get the rest of the water out. Is this normal?

The only time it doesn't start flowing right away is if I'm having sinus issues... As far as blowing your nose goes, everyone should be doing that (it's in the instructions for mine to lightly blow your nose without pinching any nostrils closed).

I like it but after about 20 minutes I'm stuffed up again. Granted I have insane sinus problems and need to go back to the doctor and more specialists. But I feel like most of the water is staying in my head. Some trickles out, but damn lately it's been kind of scary. But this is the best thing to watch if you are considering using one or if you do already: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYeR4PJSDKc WILL NOT DISAPPOINT.

I really want to be able to use a Neti pot, because I'm sure it would help with my chronic stuffiness and allergies and such. I've tried lots of times, and always feel like I'm drowning. Not good.

This used to happen to me, but I realized it was because I was trying to hard to watch in the bathroom mirror so I wasn't tilted far enough forward. :-p Haha!
After I got over watching myself do it, I've never had that problem again.

I have one still sitting in my closet. Tried it once and thought I was drowning.
Have had chronic sinus problems pretty much since I moved to BC and after too many of them, plus antibiotics, pain and time off work, I started making my own saline solution, similar to what you'd put into a neti pot (or I keep on hand a store bought saline spray - not the Otrivin saline one - that made it worse!)..... I use a 3cc syringe, warm up the fluid and just dribble it into my nostrils with my head tipped back. With one syringe I can do both nostrils...more never seemed to make a difference - just some!
It really helps, especially any time it gets dry in the apartment, need to have the heat on etc, as I've learned hot or dry air is my enemy!!!

My instructions say to do some forward bends after use to help excess water escape. If it's going down your throat you don't have the angle right. Try tipping forward or to the side more. It takes practice but eventually you just get the feel of how to do it right. My flow is: nothing for a few seconds, then drip drip, then flow. Sometime before it starts dripping it makes my head hurt. Has anyone else experienced this?

EXACTLY the same. I can't figure out what or how to change. But yeah I do it in front of the mirror so I can see if my eyes start to bulge or get like engorged or something. Creepy.

Yeah, my flow situation is similar. I think maybe the water takes a little while to make its way around. I've never had my head hurt though.
I've noticed that the flow is consistently better on one side than the other, and I'm guessing it's because of a slightly deviated septum. Just a guess though.

For people with surprise water trickles later, my instructions told me to bend over at the waist and let my head hand upside down for a few seconds, then flip back up and do a series of rapid, gentle blows. I repeat it two or three times and it clears everything out.
You could also try jumping up and down. I once went to boxing training post-neti (and thinking I had cleared everything) and within 5 seconds of jump roping, I had a faucet pouring down my face.

Maybe I'm a weirdo, but I think using a netipot is really fun. The first time I used one worked the best, but I'm surprised the water that comes out is always clear. It always feels like SO much stuff is coming out of my sinuses, but it never looks that way.

You're not too much of a weirdo. I love using mine. Especially when I'm good about it and remember to use it days in a row. I get a trip out of looking up my nose and seeing it completely clean. I HATE the feeling of boogers in my nose. It drives me nuts.

i love my netipot, got my kid hooked on it, and just popped in to say if you're using it for cold or sickness prevention/alleviation please remember to disinfect the little snoot-chute thing. (spout?)
and just had the weirdest thing pop into my head reading your stories: "nose douche"
now you know what i'll be thinking about all afternoon..... and being that crazy lady in the corner laughing to herself
