Hiya,

I'm sure I've seen a thread like this before but couldn't find it in the search. Maybe it wasn't a uk specific one.... Anyways. I never ever ever drink or buy wine, but pately I've found loads kf recipes that call for red or white...
What are your preferred cooking wines? Are they generally well-labeled sonidiots like me can tell whether they're vegan? Or is there a secret code I have to learn? Like I said, I really don't know the first thing about wine/cooking wine, so any help at all and I'd be ever so thankful.

I know nothing about wine, but Co-op labels their wine if it is suitable for vegetarians or vegans (and they list the finings used, and possibly the ingredients). If you don't have a Co-op near you www.barnivore.com can be searched for vegan brands.

Oh, and sometimes recipes call for a specific type of wine eg. 'dry'. I find supermarkets often label wine as being dry (or whatever the other possibilities are... 'sweet' maybe?) on the shelf below the bottle.

As GreenDuck rightly said, the Co-op list the ingredients and finings use in their wines (and beers) and mark whether they are veggie or vegan.

I only really cook with plonk, and often use the last leftover bit of dubious-smelling wine in gravy. Claret/Bordeaux and pinotages are my favourite wines to drink, so they are the ones I tend to cook with. You can't go too far wrong with a cab sav, either.

If it's just for cooking then Sainsburys make mini bottles of cooking wine that are labelled vegan & cost around £1.

Yeah, just for cooking Sainsburys works reall well. Their own brand wines are great value and screwcap so even if you buy a normal sized bottle
it'll keep in a cupboard. I think I have the Sauvignon Blanc and I can't can't remember which red, but they are all labelled.

I use the miniature Sainsburys bottles for cooking that jojo mentioned.

I just wish that all wines were labelled as vegan or not as I've found my favourites for home (M&S label theirs and they're lush!), but it'd be nice to be able to enjoy wine when I'm out and not have to stick to lager and spirits, especially when there are ace happy hour deals on bottles and I can't share with my omni boyfriend... sigh!

Do you have the Internet on your phone? I often google "wine name" veggie wines, "wine name" vegan or "wine name" barnivore when i'm at the pub.

The other option is to look up some popular wines at home & put a list in your phone or on paper in your purse.

The Co-Op Fair Trade wines are usually pretty good, I love that they're labelled too.
