I went on an impromptu night out and saw hardcore punk band Warhead from Kyoto and got to converse with them in very bad Japanese. My ears are ringing and I feel a bit closer to our planned month of travelling through Japan in 2014. I'd like to find contact details for them and hook up with them while we're in their hometown. My Japanese should be a lot better by then!

somehow my name has wound up on the mailing list of every puppet-related thing in the tri-state area and parts of pennsylvania, and now the henson foundation invites me to all of its speakeasies. tonight i got to sit next to jim henson's wife and daughter at a preview performance of a work in progress staged in a renovated carriage house. it was like having tea with the royal family, only better, because instead of tea we were drinking really good wine, and instead of a bunch of stuffy royals it was jane and cheryl henson and adorable puppets telling an adorable love story. oh, and it was all free. i forking love new york city.

A bunch of little things that all add up to a pretty good day. Here are the best.
I've suddenly started getting emails from UIC. I applied for the Spring semester, but haven't gotten any actual confirmation that I was accepted, but why else would they send them? So far, it's just general announcements, but I'm anticipating an acceptance letter soon! Fingers crossed that I can get some aid or loans! They have a pretty good dietetics program, and I'd love to get in to that eventually (if we stay in Chicago long enough).
Our assistant wine buyer, Jodi, got a job a another store, which sucks because she's awesome. But! I've decided to apply to replace her. There's another girl going for it. We each have a good number of strengths and weaknesses, but I'm probably the underdog. Jodi and I hung out at the wine bar after work and had a really nice conversation about me applying for this position. I came out of it thinking that I stand a pretty good chance. Best thing? If I got it, I'd have a really good excuse to drop my horrible biology class, since it conflicts with ordering days.
Most importantly, Fred nailed an interview today, and was offered a job doing IT work for a really awesome taco/burrito place. The veggie burrito has perfectly char-grilled veggies and PORTABELLOS. There are millions of taco stands in Chicago, but that is nigh unheard of. They only have two locations in Chicago, but one is about three blocks from our house, and the office where he'll be working is right above it. Best part of that is that he gets to quit his crappy job delivering sandwiches for Potbelly. And he'll be making more money, which will help with our impending move to New York that we keep postponing because we're broker than broke. I made him the VWAV carrot cake in celebration. Carrot is his flavor of cake, and that recipe is my favorite carrot cake. Wins all around.

Train ride home with PhD advisor and New Lab Kid (both dudes). We started talking about travels and they asked me about my time in India, so I started talking about all my Tantric studies and about 20 minutes later....realized that they understood Tantric in a completely different way than I do (tantric sex & other Western bastardizations of the phrase vs. the philosophy of consciousness from Kashmir I studied; it's pretty much as asexual as you can get). Yeah. Totally, totally amazingly awkward. Win?

The cat who seemed to be friends with my late cat came into my yard and let me pet him and hang out for a while. I am now drinking cider and making major headway in my household reorganization project.

I just ran 4.62 miles! Not EPIC, but my current average run is 3.3 miles and I don't think I've passed 4 miles since my track days in high school. I'm on a total runner's high now, wheeeee!

I saw my first roller derby match ever and now I want nothing more than to buy this helmet and run away to join the derby circus under the moniker of Chef Smash-All. Derby is forking amazing. Also, when my special lady friend and I got back home to her place, there was pretty much nothing to eat, yet I managed to make a delicious pasta with a bunch of random ingredients that were lying round the house. She kept saying: "It's magic. You create food out of nowhere. I literally had nothing to eat, and now it smells fantastic here and I'm eating delicious pasta." I was proud of myself and for the first time in ages, I felt that I indeed have a special talent with food, which not everybody has. A nice mood to have, since I'll be starting my first day of culinary college tomorrow. :) Excited !

It was sunny and warm and I took the dog on a 3+ mile trail wander through Discovery Park. He thoroughly enjoyed barking in the woods and meeting dogs. Also, I baked blackberry coffee cake and pumpkin muffins.

I think I found a house to buy today. It's totally awesome with an exposed brick wall and a big ole fireplace and french doors and a newly remodeled kitchen. I'm trying to not get my hopes about it but I spent all weekend looking and this was the first one that felt like home.
