So..DH's co-workers were discussing their wives (the majority are male).

Apparently the conversation turned to the fact I was vegan. Might as well said "my wife has 3 heads". They assumed I only eat salad until he pointed out that I make his lunch a lot of times..the only non-prepacked stuff IS the stuff I make. (chilli, lasagna, pastas, burritos..not really anything drastically different looking from what I'm sure their wives make)

I told him I will send in cookies or brownies or something so they'll quit hating. (It kinda surprised me since one of his co-workers is vegetarian)

They might be suspicious of vegan baked goods, but it would be great if even one person is won over and realizes that vegan food can taste good.

wait...do you mean you have only two heads?

That is just crazy. How do you ever see behind you? Evolutionary biology dictates that having fewer than 3 heads isn't possible and would have led to immediate extinction.

I used to think vegans ate brown rice with lentils and onions for dinner every day...

I was showing my recipe blog to my PhD supervisor and he was surprised how good it looked. Then he suddenly realised that some vegan food might actually be tasty (I've been feeding him vegan muffins and cakes forever, but I guess he didn't register that). I asked him where he thought the good flavor in his food came from. He said animal products. I asked if he liked plain chicken or ground beef. He said no.

Someday I'm going to cook all my co-workers a five course vegan meal.

I think I used to think vegans just add veggie burgers..which actually does describe my early vegan days..

I have invited 5 women from my church over for brunch in a couple weeks. We'll see how that goes. I was talking to a couple of them last night and they were so curious (esp since I have allergies on top of the vegan thing). They feel so sorry for me. I posted my blog pinterest board on the facebook invite so they could get over that part before then.

That's just silly. Then again I have a cousin who thought an appropriate compliment for vegan food is "Gee, that actually doesn't look that bad."

That's actually what I've had for breakfast every day this week.

The extra two heads aren't really heads at all, they're merely protuberances that are used to scare off other vegans.

You should pack him a lunch of cold, unseasoned tofu with sprouts and granola. That'll teach them.

Someone I know told me today that he tells people that based on his experience of me, vegans mostly exist on a diet of wine.

Though my boyfriend's current coworkers are insanely jealous of his lunches now (he works in a fitness club so obviously healthy food is appreciated), when he worked in the corporate world his coworkers were sooo negative and judgy about his food. they acted like he was eating turd soup. I fail to see how leftovers of a delicious, healthy homecooked meal could possibly looked down upon by people eating banquet frozen dinners, but that's just me.

Seriously. I have showed up at parties/gatherings etc where food is served. They will tell me "oh, we have wine for you!" no food. Just wine. and they don't even drink wine, they got it especially for me.

I'm ok with that.

My husband just started a new job this week. Usually he packs his own lunch since that's his only opportunity to eat meat, but he's not used to his new schedule yet. I packed him some leftovers of an awesome barley and veggie salad with a roasted garlic vinaigrette. Apparently when his coworkers found out I am a vegetarian they began the requisite "what do you eat?" and feigning feeling sorry for him apparently not noticing that he was quite happy with his meal.

Did you explain to them that it's not 1994 anymore?

That's funny - mine are actually ginormous extra boobs from all the soy I eat; they just look like heads.

I was at a work dinner and they had brought in really good vegan food from Candle Cafe (seitan piccata!!!!). As I am eating a female partner looks at my food and goes "That looks DISGUSTING! What is it? Who would eat it?" It is actually on my plate, and I am eating it. And I said "its delicious." And then avoided her going on and on about how gross it looked. WHEN SHE WAS EATING A CARCASS THAT HAD BEEN DEAD FOR WEEKS.

Most people think everything I eat has to have poison in it....Ok maybe the stuff I give them to try does but not my share of it.
I also was yelled at for pointing out my co workers meal was vegan.

i think when people say things like this, it ought to give you automatic license to say similar things about their wardrobe/taste in music/significant other, because it's every bit as rude. of course, you would never do that, because you aren't terrible.

Luckily, I've since found out that rice, lentils and onions can be very delicious together. So I've had weeks like that too :-)

That is SO RUDE. Unbelievable.

My boyfriend's dad is like that. At one family gathering I couldn't be arsed to make food so I brought takeaway and he kept going on about how it smelled utterly disgusting. It was a tempeh rueben with a side salad! I've given up on reacting, I'm just ignoring it now.

I've had such a good time here in the student residence I'm at when it comes to vegan food. Every time I've cooked something and my flatmates have tried it, they tell me how awesome it is and how "actually I really like vegetarian [vegan] food"...
