I ended up getting a waterproof Barbour jacket today. I paid a lot for it, but it's stylish, will hold up in the wet and windy Scottish winter, and will last a long time. I like it.

Oo, Barbours. I remember the special smell- my cousins had them when we were growing up. I don't think of them as being stylish at all, but of course they are aren't they? Or at least posh people wear them on their country estates.

Pretty sure my jacket doesn't smell like horses, stables, or.... well, I don't know what the Queen smells like, so...
And I don't have a country estate, but I can dream that by purchasing this coat, I'll have one some day soon, right?

Barbours don't actually smell like horses or stables (except perhaps if you always wear it to muck out and are a bit messy) but they do have a distinctive smell (I think it's the waterproofing wax) which conjures up an image of horses and moneyed people and country estates.

I went in a Barbour shop the other day - a truely strange experience! It was manned entirely by trendy people.
Strangely they've several mens jackets that are all synthetic - would have assumed they'd be down.
I bought a Northface Triclimate this winter. Was the warmest, plain back, non-bulky jacket I could find.

STILL looking - and it's getting cold! Anyone seen any good ones lately? Found a few fitted/belted ones but wanted a change this year (had same coat for 9 years!) and have been looking for cocoon shape.

Good spot - thanks TE! It's on order . . .
And completely unrelated to coats but more generally winter clothes shopping - had a flick through the new Toast catalogue last week as they sometimes have nice jersey tops and was horrified to see that they're selling rabbit fur hats and trimmed coats. First time I've seen fur so mainstream in the UK.
