I bought this a few weeks ago out of sheer curiosity and now I have no idea what to do with it. I've never had durian and have no idea what it tastes like, although its olfactory reputation preceeds it. I've been kind of hesitant to open the package for fear of it stinking up my cupboards, and/or making the neighbors think there's a dead body in my apartment. The thing both fascinates and scares me, a bit like a spider. Has anyone ever used this before? Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions? (The ingredients are durian pulp and sugar.)

I've recently had some of that! It's not as ... pungent ... as fresh durian, so you'll be fine opening it, you'll only get a whiff if you get up close. It doesn't taste as strong as fresh durian either, but it's still a bit of an acquired taste!

my experience with durian (in the form of a fresh fruit smoothie) :
*sip* ... i think i like this. *sip* ... but it's kind of gross. ...*sip* but i can't stop drinking it.
i'm intrigued by what you could use this for.

I'm Durian obsessed. So, not impartial. However, this paste is very mild and hardly smelly at all. You can open it without needing to fumigate afterwards.

I generally eat it straight up :) but a common application would be in a mooncake or even daifuku. I don't know a reliable recipe for each, but you can google around to get ideas.

i also love durian and other stinky fruits. processed durian is durian "light" and it is, as said, just a whiff of what durian is. a good introduction.

and oh god a mooncake or bao with durian in the middle???? drool.......

For some reason I read this as "Delorian Cake." Imagine my disappointment.
