Apparently the upstairs neighbours are too cold or something? The thermostat is for the entire house and I'm sweltering, so it's clearly on and on high. I don't know if the heat for the upstairs is broken or if they just have ridiculously low cold tolerances...

I don't know if the heat for the upstairs is broken or if they just have ridiculously low cold tolerances... We have a lot of temperature issues here now. My mom wants the house at 69. I want it around 72-73, which is where we need it for the birdies. My dad seems to need it at 86. We keep it at 74 and my poor dad is constantly bundled up in sweaters and blankets and freezing. I think it is because of his kidney issues, or maybe just medication side effects. I'm completely weird. I hate central heating because it gives me headaches, and I constantly have my wind tunnel ceiling fan (LOVE that thing) on, but in office and school buildings, Im constantly cold and miserable. I get cold easily.

I'm basically hot all of the time. Everyone else is piling on sweaters and I'm still comfortable in t-shirt and shorts. I've definitely taken hour long walks home at midnight in January in a t-shirt and been at a perfectly comfortable temperature. I think my temperature preferences might be a little bit weird...

Tolerances aside though, the upstairs people apparently have no heat for real. Which makes no sense because it's hot air being blown throughout the whole building and it is definitely blowing and it is definitely hot. Whatever the issue is, as far as I can tell it is outside of our control. I e-mailed the landlord about it describing the current thermostat settings.
I noticed each individual vent can be opened or closed. I want to suggest that they check that, but I'm assuming that's obvious enough that they've already done it and suggesting it would probably just be insulting.

I just mixed hot sauce into this hummus I had leftover, and now I'm eating it with a fork.

oh man, tea, that sucks a bunch. we're having a slightly different version of that same thing happening in the print studio where I work/school/live(pretty much), the 5th floor is venting its spray booth (which is weirdly hotter than the pits of hell) in to our studio, so we have all these pockets of warm air all over the place and it is ALWAYS gross and steamy. no fun.

I'm always freezing. Always. I have to sleep on the couch when my boyfriend wants the window open. And I have to cover myself in both blankets and cat.

I need to have a desk fan on in the bedroom all night, pointed away from me, mostly for the white noise but also for air circulation. I'm a light sleeper and little noises can make me jump. So long as I don't open the window it doesn't get cold.

My ideal temp is somewhere around 78. We haven't turned the heat on yet but we'll keep it around 68 when we do. Right now our house is 74 but I'm bundled up. When we get to our winter temp, I'll wear a scarf and gloves inside.

Update: The landlord just sent me an e-mail. Based on the contents of the e-mail he thinks the upstairs heating is fine and they just aren't used to Canadian temperatures.

I think I'm either taking too much B12 or my body is just super efficient at absorbing it. I've been itchy all over for like 3 days now, and I can't think of any other reason. what the H.

I'm trying to see if we can get through October without the heat kicking on. My dad is a wimp, though, so I don't think we will. I usually set the thermostat at 61 or 62 but he keeps turning it up. Heating oil is so forking expensive right now that he needs to just put on a sweater and deal with it. Or pay the entire heating bill himself, either one.

I was shivering in thick socks and a sweatshirt.* This was with our house at 70 degrees. I lived in Florida for two years and lost about 50 pounds. I used to go sleeveless in the 60s. Now it feels like winter. Uuuuuugggghhhhhh. *pants and stuff too

I haven't had to start cold weather lock down officially yet, but I have been wearing my slanket. First I have to drop the storm windows. Then layer sweatshirts and slanket, then comes inside hat. Then after that's done, I'll turn the heat up to 64 or so. Unfortunately, my apartment is so poorly insulated, it doesn't matter if I have it on or not. After sweatshirts, slanket, hat, I have another blanket I swaddle myself in.

I think I posted here about the dog I went to look at this weekend. She was a nice dog, but I wasn't sure, and I wanted to look at a few dogs before I make a decision. The woman who has the dog contacted us, saying she assumed we didn't want the dog because we hadn't called her back yet, and she has someone else coming to look at the dog. My mom told her that we liked the dog but didn't want to rush into a decision, and that we had a couple other dogs we were looking at. The woman seemed to be pissed off by this, and I feel bad, but I don't want to just adopt the first dog I see without being sure that she's the right dog for me. But I guess this dog isn't even an option now. I was really hoping it would be be super easy for me to find the right dog, but I guess it's going to be a journey.

So does the eternal flame at JFK's grave ever go out? Like, even in a deluge of rain, wouldn't it be extinguished even if just for a minute? Then someone comes to light it again ASAP. It must be someone's job at Arlington to make sure it never goes out, like a groundskeeper.
And in the zombie apocalpyse and beyond, you know, is something gonna think to make sure it stays lit? Or will we be too preoccupied fighting off the undead?

Someone just confided in me that she is pregnant. I love it when people trust me that much to let me know something so important.

[is there a butane tank or something underneath it?] ha! I pictured someone lighting it with a Bic lighter but I sense there might be something more sophisticated going on that escapes my lowbrow thinking. "Thanks for the light!" The ghost of JFK would say. "It's mighty cold and dark down here." And I will light my cigarette on the eternal flame! Or better yet, a sparkler! I bet if you light a cigarette using the eternal flame, you'd be ceremoniously escorted from the cemetary. So much for that fantasy.

My cold might actually be getting better! I just remembered that the thing I'm currently balancing my laptop on is a box full of incense because I could SMELL IT. Just a whiff and just for a second, but yay!
