I have a couple of kilos of green tomatoes that are not going to ripen.

Any suggestions?

Chutney! Equal amounts green tomatoes, onions and apples, and (I'm sorry I don't remember the amounts) sugar, apple cider vinegar, mustard seeds, fresh mint, salt and cayenne.

Or how about a cooked vinegar-based chutney? It comes with the bonus of keeping for a while like jam.

This is the first recipe that popped up on google and it already looks good.

Fried green tomatoes are pretty awesome, especially when dipped in a home made cashew sour cream or ranch dressing.
I have added diced green tomatoes to chili before.
There are several recipes using green tomatoes in the cook book 660 Curries. You could probably google "Indian green tomato recipes" if you don't have that book.

I've seen some really tasty-looking green tomato curry recipes. Haven't tried one yet, but I have some green tomatoes from my garden that I need to use, so that's what I'm thinking about.

I just made green tomato apple chutney today from Fresh from the Vegan Slow Cooker. Smells delicious and I used up all of my unripening tomatoes.

sooooo true! they are awesome in smoky chipotle ranch, too!

i've mixed them with chopped ripened tomatoes to make a pasta sauce once - it was super awesome!

I had dinner at johnp's last week and he made an awesome green tomato pie - Pretty sure it was a regular pie crust filled with sliced green tomatoes tossed with a touch of brown sugar, salt, and pepper, topped with a bread crumb/margarine topping and baked. It was so amazing.

that sounds fascinating, poopiebitch.

i made that green tomato and lentil stew from the kitchn, and it isn't as good as i was expecting. (but then i did use expired toor dal and expired brown rice, so that might have a little to do with it. neither seemed all that bad though, so i took a chance.) there was definitely too much water, even without adding that extra cup of water, so i had to add about 1/2 cup of chickpea flour slurry to make it less watery. i didn't have the sambar, so i added the major spices that make up the sambar, so that was okay.

today i am going to make chili, because i also picked a large amount of peppers. do any of you have a favorite tomatillo salsa recipe? i figure a big batch of that could take a good portion of these greenies.

No. Not amazing. Last year I attempted a green tomato pie that was supposed to replicate apple pie. It was a disaster. Which was sad because my crust turned out pretty nice. But the filling was revolting.

This wasn't meant to be a sweet pie, though. It was a savory pie. And it was amazing. I should know, because I ate it.

So are green tomatoes actually tomatillos?

And if you are eating anything johnp makes, you better believe it is amazing. I tried to convince him we should partner swap so he could come cook for me forever but he wasn't going for it.

No, green tomatoes are actually just unripe tomatoes.

And yeah, when johnp put out an open invitation to dinner for the next night on facebook, we packed up the fam and drove 3 hours to go. For dinner. And it was worth it.

Yeah, green tomatoes are unripe tomatoes that, if left on the vine, would eventually turn red (or yellow, or purple), but at the end of the season there are always green tomatoes left that will freeze and never ripen if left on the vine. Tomatillos are a different plant. They grow inside a papery covering, and I'm pretty sure will never turn anything other than a lighter shade of green.

Oh man my reply was supposed to say "no, mine was not amazing". Sorry! Glad yours was good.

Mine also made my mouth itchy, after. Was so turned off by the whole thing that I think I gave to just give up on green tomato dreams.

oh, no. sorry for the confusion, linanil. i read somewhere that green tomatoes could be used as a substitute for tomatillos.
(but there are other color tomatillos. i know i had seeds for purple tomatillos that i never got around to planting.)

Oh, no worries! I'm sorry your green tomato pie was gross and made your mouth itch :(

i made spaghetti sauce. not bad! i think next time i will add a bit more spices. (i was afraid of overspicing it, and it's a little dull. still tasty though.) they REALLY cooked down. looks like pesto. (i used garlic, lightly caramelized some onions, olive oil, basil, oregano and nooch. i think i may add some fennel and/or red pepper flakes next time. the recipe i was loosely following said to add sugar, and i added only like 1-2 tbsp, and that was plenty. used a potato masher instead of the blender recommended in the recipe.)
