I shipped my car half across the country (California-> Denver). I was using a mover and they coordinated the move of my car. I used Allied moving and it took me a month to get my car. My company was paying for a rental for me but I wish I had my car. Not sure why it took so long to get it.

So yeah, not exactly a positive experience.

I'm looking into shipping my motorcycle from MA->IA. I don't have any recommendations for either cars or motorcycles though.

This won't be helpful, but yes, we did ship a car from NJ to CA and it was slightly stressful wondering if we would ever see our happy little Subaru again, but lo and behold, the carrier did contact me at destination and there was a joyful reunion with our auto.

This was many years ago and probably you can now track your car on the internets as it makes its journey across the lands. I would totally look for that sort of service should I have to do this again. The carrier did keep in contact via phone (pre-email) which was appreciated.

What's the route? Could they hire someone to drive it?

I briefly thought that but them I remembered Kerouac's On the Road character Moriarty and his treatment of the caddy they had to deliver to Chicago.....made me think, "Ah, maybe not such a good idea."

There's that, but also the maintenance aspect of putting that many miles on the car at once; hard highway driving over mountain ranges, gas prices and so forth. For us, the cost of shipping outweighed the cost of driving both vehicles.
