was julia's work situation realistic? why wouldn't her bosses know that she had just adopted a child, and why wouldn't she have taken some maternity leave?

i loved amber's conversation with max.

Such a good episode! I really love that they are showing a more human side to Julia with actual flaws, I was getting sick of her being miss perfect all the time.

Also, I am in love with Adam. *swoon* The scene when he was on the phone with Haddie was amazingly acted. But I have loved Peter Krause since Six Feet Under.

I too cried at the end, and I was watching at work, lol!

What's that?

More realistically, why would she have quit when she might have gotten severance pay after being fired (and unemployment $!). Like, seriously, stupid.

I cringed when Ray Romano's mean photog dude kissed Sarah. And then her being all creepy and dishonest with Mark. Boo she is becoming too precious and annoying and its a waste of Lauren Graham, who did such a great job giving depth to Sarah with her ex and with Amber. They've stuck her with so many losers, because LG can make sexy chemistry with a rock. But no one can make sexy chemistry with RR because he only ever comes across as a clueless curmudgeon. Not even LG.

I liked Julia's story. It is really freaking hard to be a senior associate at a large law firm, and I can see her being overwhelmed, but they shouldn't have made her miss a filing deadline, because the person who keeps all deadlines like that in any case would be the paralegal and the junior associate. Cases are so heavily staffed because they want to ensure no one drops the ball. I would have liked to see her exhausted and losing it and overwhelmed and then just walking away. I don't like the insinuation that women who work in tough jobs will inevitably fail in their jobs.

Speaking of people who get stuck with every loser because they are so good at creating chemistry. Amber and mini-Zeke. Please not a storyline about the healing power of the vagina on the soul of a wounded war vet.

And really showing Zeke being a bully to the coach and getting results? Yuck. If he had known K had cancer at that point he would have yelled it out to get Victor in the game. Yuck Zeke. Nice modeling that being a jerk gets results.

I love Adam! Only because I still hang on to him as Nate from Six Feet Under.

I definitely have some residual love for Peter Krause left over from SFU. Even though I pretty much hated Nate by the end.

Soooooo, they lied to haddie about her mom's chemo. Are they going to keep lying to her? That's pretty messed up. However, I really liked this episode except as a dietitian it was driving me crazy with adams food restrictions. Loved the scene with christina and max.

This show is just so sucktacular at some moments and wonderful at others.

Sucktacular: Julia the one dimensional stay at home mom - bored and getting together with shallow gossip SAHMs to talk about which teacher is into her hot husband. Jealous SAHM who wants her husband to be as bored and dissatisfied as she is. Why can't we have portrayal of a stay at home parent who enjoys being with their kid? When Kristina had Nora, she ran out the door at top speed to run the campaign for Bob Little, with no mention of how she managed anything to do with parenting /nora.

Max vetoing everything. Why did the show have him win the class presidency. He is horrible.

Amber crying and overacting

Sarah, Mark and Hank. UGH.

Crosby and angry neighbor - yuck.

Good: Ryan. He is hot.

Well, at least Julia's husband liked being the SAHD.

I really don't like the amber story right now. And somebody tell me why ray Romano is on this show?

I was so pissed at the Julia storyline. What a selfish bisque for trying to keep her husband from a good job that he loves.

I love Amber & Ryan.

I hate the crazy neighbor of the Luncheonette storyline too.

Kristine and Max dancing was sweet though, even though Max bugs the shiitake out of me.

I have a huge crush on Joel.

Drunk Ray Romano is creepy.

Agree about the neighbor. Man, that looks like a nice condo though.

Joel really is the only sane one, and possibly Camille.

I thought Julia was ok this week. she seems to have gotten over joel's new job. phew!
so, um, christina's not going to die right? also, they lied to haddie and said her mom was ok, and now she's going to be really sick next week. i'm guessing they aren't actually going to deal with that, but it's pretty dumb of them to have lied!

i really don't like the annoying neighbor at the luncheonette story line. i like that actress a lot! it's a bummer she had to play such a one dimensional, annoying lady.

also, sara kinda deserved to get broken up with, honestly. i feel bad for her, but like..come on! aaaaand, and as soon and she and mark got in that fight, they should have both flown home or mark should have flown back to the wedding. it's a short flight. no reason for them both to stay in LA being pissed off and not doing anything. that didn't make much sense to me at all.

i love amber and ryan. i think that's the most interesting story right now.

I can't believe the show could make me like Joel less for not setting Ryan up to succeed. Poor dude. Another Braverman fixer-upper. Pick someone who has less than you and make their lives worse (see Haddie's boyfriend (whom I still miss).

Mark was so on point when he talked about Sara screwing up the stuff that makes her happy. Its crazy that she'd rather go fix depressed RR than go hang out with Mark's friends. He seemed to really love her but know that he couldn't be with someone who creates drama in her life by inviting broken people in to fix them.

RR and his kid storyline? zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Hurrah for an episode without Max-Angst. I don't even like his storylines. I don't see any redeemable qualities about the character. He is mean and selfish and apparently his "awesome" parents get compliance out of him by giving him candy. I have a few friends whose kids are on the spectrum and changing food choices - esp to cut out sugar, junk and dyes seems pretty prevalent, but we're supposed to believe that Mom-guru Kristina would just pack him full of it?

The Luncheonette was a pretty good resolution, though the whole episode was an illustration of why it would suck to work with Crosby. He undermined Adam at every turn and just kept making things worse and worse. I would have liked to see Adam actually resolve a conflict in a mature way.

Oh and I like Julia and Victor. Her coming in after he got angry about the failed test and showing him how much he had improved was really a great moment of parenting. For a show called Parenthood, this show has relatively few of them.

i love her, too! i hope they are setting her character up for something else. that storyline was pretty weak and not funny.

i like some of the stuff with victor, but i wish it wasn't the same story every week. it's always julia struggles to connect with him, she talks about how hard adoption is, and then they connect a little bit at the end. it would be nice to go a little deeper into victor's past or even just his problems now.

i've never been a huge fan of kristina, but high kristina is my favorite character.

in middle school, one of my best friend's little brother was exactly like max. almost to a t. her parents bribed him to do anything, like buying him video games and toys for sitting at the table while her mom did his homework. also, she gave him candy whenever he was being difficult. they were in denial and refused to get him any help. so i find max's storylines pretty realistic, and also have some sympathy for the character because had his parents not been in denial so long or stuck with having a specialist, he probably wouldn't be so horrible.

I now work with a child on the spectrum and bribery ("incentives") are actually the most highly recommended interventions suggested by his special school. This is actually highly recommended-by-specialists behavioral management, not just lazy parenting. It might be better to not bribe with candy, but if the kid has a healthy diet overall and that's the most motivating thing, I don't see the problem.

ETA: Dr. Google also says there's no evidence at all that special diets help at all with autism and there is evidence that they don't.

Yeah, that's very common. We use that with many of the spectrum kids I work with at school. Not candy necessarily, but stickers, which is what they were using with Max several seasons ago. Perhaps Max is getting too old to be motivated by stickers!

You don't think they'll kill Kristina, do you? :'(

Bribery can be very effective. I've never used candy, but stickers work similarly. Sometimes bribery (external rewards) can help a kid achieve a goal for the first time...which can lead to good feelings and a step towards internal motivation.
