Strict. I have had Daiya get moldy before 7 days. I assume that was due to some mishandling during shipping, but I kept it in the freezer from then on.

I've used it until it looks moldy or slimy. I think it's just as suggestion.

Not that strict. I've kept it twice as long without issue. Make sure it's sealed tightly, and if it's the shreds, they're very easy to freeze.

I just finished off a Daiya wedge that I opened 2 weeks ago, and it was fine. No fuzz, smelled and tasted fine.

I have an opened and partially used bottle of Annie's worcestershire sauce that I've been keeping in my cupboard. I just noticed that it says "refrigerate after opening" on the bottle. It's been in there for almost a year, but still has a few months until the expiration date on the bottle. Will I die if I use it?

Try it and see! Let us know if you die.

Seriously though, I've eaten stuff that is supposed to be refrigerated and hasn't been and it's been fine.

I left frozen Field Roast sausages on my counter for 48 hours. I forgot about them in the bottom of a grocery bag.
Should I still eat them? Should I refreeze them first (to kill things?) - the package says refreezing is ok.

Cooking them thoroughly to kill things makes more sense than refreezing them (I would have thought refreezing them would adversely affect the texture as well).

how long does canned coconut cream last in the fridge? I opened it for moong dal but don't remember when I made it. It might be over 2 weeks old...

It doesn't taste rancid and I just tossed it into some rice thinking the boiling would kill whatever had grown in it.

Should I eat it?

And this is why I shouldn't eat expired food. I am convinced I'm going to be hit by the everlurking yuckies and am now saying my prayers to whatever saint governs food poisoning and coconuts.

What about unopened fruit smoothie that's 12 days out of date?

This reminds me once years ago I had an unopened, old smoothie in the passenger seat of the car while I was driving to work. Out of the corner of my eye I briefly saw what I thought was a large balloon and then, BOOM! Smoothie everywhere! I was covered in it and it was dripping from the ceiling. Best guess is the smoothie fermented and the driving was shaking it enough that the pressure inside the bottle inflated the hard plastic lid. It also left a welt on my arm from the blast. Craziest morning ever.

So yeah, I might avoid the old smoothie. Unless it still smelled good!

Hahah I'm sorry but so funny- I can easily picture that happening to me!

Generally, freezing doesn't really kill germy things. Just keeps stuff from continuing to grow while frozen. You have to cook it to kill it. If it exists in the first place.

The exploding smoothie story reminds me of something that happened in our old refrigerator...I had bought a glass bottle of lemonade at Aldi and it got shoved to the back, where things tend to freeze. And they also tend to not be seen. After a few months, I started finding "snow" on items that were laying on the shelves below, and I couldn't figure out where it was coming from. Then I noticed it was sticky. A few days later, I moved something and found a lid on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator...the lid to the lemonade, which had frozen, popped its top, and spewed snow apparently.

How long can I soak cashews? I had plans to make the PPK alfredo today and starting soaking them at noon. Then I got dumped by my long-term boyfriend and proceeded to eat a lot of coconut bliss ice cream and mint chocolate chips and didn't need dinner. If I put them in the fridge can I make the alfredo tomorrow? Should I drain them?

Haven't died yet and that pasta is so yummy! I was initially very skeptical blending the cashews with vegetable broth because it looked like dirty water, and the finished sauce kinda smelled weird, but it was amazing. My roommate said it tasted like the fancy version of Kraft Dinner, which is a compliment.

Unopened tempeh that's 11 days over its "best by" date.

Brrrr it's probably no good.

Is it still whitish, or does it have a lot of black/grey specks? If it is very speckled, the taste has probably gone off in a bad way, even if it's not turned into a health hazard.

It looks like it did the day I bought it (ie. not speckled). I haven't opened it yet, so I don't know if the smell is off, but if the taste is off, won't it smell bad too?
