Has anyone been to southern India? We're flying into Mumbai then traveling through the south for 3 weeks. Do they put ghee in everything? Any other recommendations?

We did this exact thing in '07. There's lots of vegan south indian stuff. I basically love sambar, dosa and uttapam, so that's what I ate for every meal, but there's loads more.

southern india is pretty conservative, so i'd recommend bringing a scarf or two to cover up the boobies if you have those. otherwise you'll probably cause a stir walking around and in the train stations.

Did you go to any nature preserves? I'd love to go somewhere we can check out wild animals but i'm really skeptical about how 'wild' they are. We're avoiding anything called an 'animal park' or something similar but I'm not sure about places where you tour and just try to spot elephants and whatnot.

Also, I got some great info from this thread: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=3063&hilit=india but since it's 2 years old I thought there might be some new info on the scene.

North India (Mumbai and above) you should watch out for ghee, especially at nicer restaurants that cater to Westerners. (Also at those restaurants, watch out for paneer and other cheese being added to Everything.) In the South, they cook in coconut oil and you don't have to worry. Drink lots of young coconuts for me! Man, I miss those.

Oh! The best thing we did was purchase one of those water purifiers that work by using ultraviolet light. They're great because they're portable and you can use them in water bottles and in pitchers at restaurants. When we came home, we sold ours on Ebay for a nice price, so it really didn't cost us much.

I've spent a bit of time in South India. Do you know whereabouts you're going yet?

We have a rough plan that includes Mumbai, Madurai, Kochi, Munnar and maybe Ooty or a nature preserve. A few days are still open but we'd like to get hotel reservations made since it's high tourist time. Any suggestions?
