i have an appointment to bring him to the vet at 6:40 this evening, but in the meantime i am having a really hard time concentrating or getting anything done at work.

it's sounding more and more like he has chronic renal failure. he's dropped a lot of weight over the past few weeks, he's been laying in a weird way, he's not meowing when he is normally a big mouth who never shuts up, i haven't really seen him eating or drinking (granted, i work all day and i don't follow him around when i'm home, but i normally notice him eating here and there), he's been a little stumbly, and just generally grumpy-seeming. or grumpier than normal.

i am really hoping it's not CRF and it's just some kind of short-term illness or infection or something easy to treat/cure/get rid of.

blah.

i just want my kitty back to normal. i can tell that something isn't right and it's heartbreaking to not know how to help him.

I hope he is ok, there is nothing worse than sick pets because you want to help so bad and can't do anything.

Poor kitty. Poor esme.

I don't really have any advice to offer, except that if you have to give him fluids for some reason, that's something you can do at home (provided you're not afraid to stick your cat with a needle) that helps cut the costs a little. We did that with my FIL's cat instead of bringing him in every day for a week to have it done.

I hope your kitty is feeling better. If he does need fluids, MBM is right that it is easy to do at home. I did it when I was 16 with my cat.

the vet think it's either CRF or his thyroid. fingers crossed for thyroid because it's more manageable, but he seems to have more of the CRF symptoms.

i get blood results back tomorrow morning.

in the meantime, i need to try to make him eat and i have no idea how. he licked his food a few times and then walked away.

Eat your food kitty!

Crossing my fingers it's his thyroid. My cat had this and we successfully treated it for several years before it got the better of us. Just a cream to rub in his ears twice a day.

We also lost a cat to renal failure right before I deployed. As hard as it was, it was also very fast and because of that I don't think she suffered. Which is what I look for in a death, for my pets and for me.

I know how scary/frustrating it is when they wont eat!

I went through this with my cat when he was first diagnosed with cancer.

The usual advice is "smelly" food- "people tuna", sardines, baby food etc. See if he will drink the liquid from the can tuna or broth.

It might not be the greatest thing for a cat with kidney problems but the idea is to first get him to eat SOMETHING- and then to try to transition him to something healthier.

still no word from the vet, but i don't really get cell reception at work, so if i don't hear from them by lunch, i'll go out and see if i just missed a call or something.

i got bill to eat a teeeeny bit of food this morning. maybe a teaspoons worth. but it's something. he'll also eat, like, 3 or 4 treats at a time. so hopefully i can do this a few times a day and build him back up.

suzy, i was reading about renal failure and how to get them to eat. i picked up some tuna, and a bunch of wet food (the chunky kind with gravy - yum!) since that's what he sort of likes.

the fluids they gave him last night seems to be absorbing and he seems a little more perky/less grumpy. the vet needs a urine sample so that's our goal for today. eat and pee.

i really need to get him fixed up. this blows.

I am so sorry! Good vibes and hugs! I lost my cat earlier this year to renal failure, so I know how hard the waiting can be. :(
