Batten down the hatches!
Basically, we're getting a ginormous Halloween super-storm. A hybird hurricane/snowstorm of sorts, that will last almost all week. I can't make this stuff up!

Can't it come just a few days earlier? I have a bunch of shiitake to do this weekend that I'd love an excuse to not have to do.

NOOOOOOO! i need all the time to get ready for the charity raffle. it needs to come after sunday evening, because we won't have the time to batten the hatches until then.

Dudes this is really serious! We're in a state of emergency! And my news casters keep saying 'You're almost 100% guaranteed to lose power.' That's pretty terrible. I'm so scared! I'm really glad I'm here though to help my parents with their house and do whatever needs to be done. But no internet or tv or hot food for days or even weeks (so they said)? ahhhhh!

I could not agree with you more. Plus I don't want the storm screwing up Halloween. Or my birthday, which is the day after Halloween.

Wonderful. I swear, we loose power every time someone sneezes too hard.

I'm sorry you guys! My family is down in Virginia, but I still get office of the governor e-mails. One this morning came about a state of emergency. This is so late for a hurricane and it's really crappy that it's going to turn into a slow-moving nor'easter. Dangerous stuff!

My family lost power during hurricane Isabel when I lived there and we didn't have power for two straight weeks. And we lived in Hampton Roads - a really populated area. I'll have my fingers crossed for you guys!

I'm so not prepared for this! Just hoping my son's school is canceled in advance, since we're walkers!

I work at a private school and they still haven't announced a closure yet. I really don't know what they're waiting for.

Sheesh! Are they expecting that it will only be a drizzle of rain and a light breeze?!

I'm so scared! We have a lot of old trees around our house that are good candidates for falling due to the soaked ground. :( praying that they don't fall. I can live without electricity but that's legit scary.

my neighbor across the street refuses to cut the dead limbs off her trees (they've been dead since shortly after irene) i predict a 100% chance of losing power, and possibly having to repair my house.

Pro: the storm will take them off for you.
Con: the storm will take them off for you, possibly in your direction.

I work for the state and they closed the office tomorrow. My husband's company in NJ told him not to come in so that he doesn't get stuck if they close the bridges. That alone tells me this is going to be really bad. We are pretty prepared. We have a generator and gas if needed and a sump in the basement. I'm worried about the very large tree in our backyard, directly over our bedroom. I may sleep downstairs on the couch for the next two days. I'm also worried about having to locate our three cats if we have to leave in a hurry.

Yeah, there's a large tree directly outside my bedroom window. (Like, I could reach out and touch it.) I'm REALLY hoping it stays put, not just for my sake, but for the sake of the elderly woman that lives under me. Maybe I'll make a plan to check on her tomorrow, regardless of what happens.

yes, it's a very good idea to sleep downstairs. (we slept downstairs last year, luckily the neighbor's trees stayed intact, but they've gotten much less healthy in the past year.) best to be out of harm's way just in case.

you are totally prepared! good luck with the kitties!

I am waiting this storm out in a hotel in center city (i am here for work and wasn't able to go home in time), which is a weird and solitary experience. I guess the good news is there are really no trees in this area.. anyone want to speculate on the chances center city loses power?

well, part of the limb fell onto her car. i can assure you the repair is going to be more expensive than having had a tree company out. the power lines are safe for now. (here's hoping they keep falling in "small" increments like that.)

p.s. who parks under a half dead tree in a hurricane?

Hey all, hope everyone is ok! We are shut in and stocked up for days. Luckily we managed to borrow a generator from a family member who had a small extra one. So if we do lose power we have that to run our sump pump. It's not big enough to run the whole house. But as long as the sump is running and we don't get any water in our basement I'll be happy.

Off of work for the next few days. I'm wondering if I should start cooking like a mad women now before the power goes out...

Zucchini Delight
Tacos
Burritos
Pizza
Mac N Cheese, broccoli, and breaded tofu
Stuffed Peppers
Baked Potatoes
Pasta with Crumbled Tempeh and sauce
Pizza Fries

Mexican Hot Chocolate Snickerdoodles (gluten free attempt)

What should I make first?
